This teacher says if you ever wonder why people are leaving the teaching profession in droves, this is one of the main reasons. She has students that she has written an incident report on every single day. She has contacted the principal and the support staff and the help that was given to her was to email the parents of the students. Basically, no help or support at all. We have many epidemics in our country but this is one of the biggest that doesn’t get enough attention. We all know our school system is a failure but even more than we know. Students these days have zero consequences. They are passed with straight F’s. They are allowed to be a continuing distraction and disruption in the classrooms and nothing is done about it. We need to start over. 💯 Why do we allow this this as a school? As a district? As a city? As a state? As a country? It didn’t use to be like this? This is why other countries surpass us in education, there is no discipline in our schools. Would you want to be a teacher in this day and age at a public school?

As he forces a supersized STAAR test on our kids in public school, Greg Abbott knows that private school parents won’t tolerate the STAAR test. I want to speak directly to San Francisco’s public-school parents and our students. I know many of you are worried about the possibility of a teacher strike that could temporarily close schools—and I want you to hear this clearly from me: our kids come first. As mayor, even though I don’t oversee our school district, I’m deeply committed to making sure our kids get a world-class education—with safe public schools where kids can learn and educators are well supported. It is crucial that our schools remain open. Every day in the classroom matters. I have been in regular contact with both the school district and the teachers union, and I am urging them to keep talking so kids can keep learning. Our working parents can’t afford to stay home if schools are closed. Our special needs students can’t afford to lose access to vital services that help them succeed. Schools are the foundation that makes daily life possible and helps every family in San Francisco thrive. I am also actively working with city departments to ensure we have options for our students in the event that classrooms do close. But I want to make one thing clear—what is best for our students is for the adults to continue discussions at the table so we can keep kids in the classroom. I will continue pushing for solutions that keep our schools open and our students learning. San Francisco’s families deserve nothing less.

The speaker Ms Kate Keddell is Chair of Queens School board (Dunedin) and she says the govt is wrong to ask schools to cut references to the Treaty of Waitangi. She knows all the buzzwords- diversity, inclusion, blah blah blah but doesn't know critical items like attendance rates or achievement results. Around 200 govt schools out of 2000 have made public statements reiterating their commitment to the Treaty. Kate said the Treaty was fundamental for schools in an inclusive society. "What it means for us is that when we are making decisions, we look at them through a lens of equity and cultural responsiveness and inclusion," she said. The government has said the Treaty is an obligation for the Crown, not schools. It said schools should be focused on ensuring high achievement for all students, not on figuring out how to give effect to the Treaty.

Through the last week of negotiations, I’ve been saying to our school district, our educators, and our parents that I want our kids to be in school on Monday. The conversations were productive yesterday, continuing well into the night, but it appears that now, work has ended for the evening, and our public schools will be closed tomorrow. I’m disappointed that the parties could not come to an agreement. And frankly, I’m frustrated—real progress has been made, and there are hours left in the day that should be spent working to keep schools open tomorrow. There is no reason both parties can’t be at the table right now figuring this out. These are complex and important negotiations. That’s why I, and other city leaders, asked both parties this morning to allow three additional days for schools to stay open while conversations continue. I have made myself and my office available to both parties at any time. I have been here all day, and I will stay as long as it takes to get this done—but I am continuing to urge the parties to reach an agreement as soon as possible. At the same time, our team has been preparing for this scenario all week. The city is ready to provide support to public school students. That includes meal distribution for students who rely on school for food access, extra hours at community childcare centers and Rec and Park programs, and community safety resources to keep kids safe if they’re not in school. If your family is impacted by school closures, please check in with your childcare or afterschool programs to see if they have extended hours. Local public libraries are also open as normal—but remember: children under 8 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. For resources and information, visit San Franciscans deserve schools where students thrive and our educators feel truly supported.
