In Mrs. Doubtfire, Sally Field’s character was just so insufferable that it was insane. The worst ex wife ever. She divorced Robin Williams character simply because he cared about his kids more than she did. He tried to make them happy in every way he could. Never cheated on her.

She’s flawed but not horrible. Robin William’s character is a manchild who can’t keep a steady job. He can’t cook or clean, he just goofs off and has her clean up the mess. The whole point is he becomes a better person and a better father while being Mrs. Doubtfire.

If people watch this movie in 2026 and still take the husband's side, they're absolutely insane and devoid of any emotional intelligence. He was a terrible husband and a terrible father.

Her anger was justified, considering that he never consulted her about stuff like, oh I don’t know.. unleashing the goddamn San Diego zoo in their house and quitting his job due to his virtuous nature regarding smoking in cartoons. He’s was the epitome of irresponsible, but his childlike attitude was a boon in bonding with his children.

When I watched the film as a child that’s exactly what I thought. Watching as an adult you cannot help but side with her. He’s immature, reckless and selfish to the point of being cruel.

Dude, Robin Williams character loved his kids, but is an AWFUL husband. Stunted adult. Never wanted to discipline, always fun. Sally had FOUR children including him. Dude has a whole zoo at the house and has the house destroyed

She definitely cared just as much about the kids, if not (arguably) more, hence why she had to divorce him.

My uncle got divorced in 1992 and he shared custody of his two young children with his ex wife. He hated this movie because of how they gave ALL the power to Miranda. The worst part for him is how they had Daniel THANK Miranda for allowing him to be with his own children.

As a kid I remember being like "But why are they getting divorced?" Because he brought ponies to the birthday party?

Oh my gosh how could you get this so wrong. Her husband was a child. He thought raising children was being a playmate rather than a parent. She wanted structure and discipline mixed with love and he wasn’t capable of blending those things. It made her fall out of love with him and long for a real adult man.

Act I, Scene I (basically): “Daniel, how DARE YOU throw our child a birthday party and make a (totally cleanable) mess in the house!” Truly, an insufferable bitch.

If you've ever been married, you know how horrible a situation she was in. Husband just wants to be the cool, fun dad. She has to work all day and then come home to a disaster while he and the kids got to have a ton of fun, no thank, she's in the right.

Definitely not. Daniel adored his kids and was the fun parent (but he couldn’t hold down a job) and Miranda had to be the grown up in their relationship and she’d had enough. She had also fell out of love with Daniel and didn’t love him the way she originally did.

As screwy as her husband was, nothing he did would ever justify their divorce. She was an absolutely awful human being.

But this happens in marriages. When you are in your 20's you are one person and 20 years later you evolve and grow - while your partner may not. I found this very realistic. People shouldn't just stay together "for the kids".

Then she wasted no time hooking up with James Bond right after their divorce.

This entire movie is just nightmare fuel.

Yes!!! I see this as a kid and I remember thinking she's happy to destroy her kids lives all because he was a fun parent and loved the kids more! WTF. She was just so insufferable.

I think divorcing him was the right call bc he was irresponsible & not a great partner to her. However, to go above & beyond to take his kids from him was atrocious behavior. It was selfish & only made the kids suffer as much as him. That’s what made her a reprehensible person.

Um I think robin Williams character was a bit of a bum and couldn’t keep work or didn’t want to. In the real world making your Wife work and hanging out with the kids doesn’t work long term.

100% agree. Miranda was easily one of the most unlikeable characters in any comedy ever. She divorced him basically for being a fun, loving dad. The villain we were never supposed to root against.😂

I’m gonna defend her. He had good intentions, but her character felt like she had 4 kids, not 3 kids and a husband. That’s great for the kids, not her. She was looking for a little maturity

We're doing this again, huh? He was irresponsible, undermined her parenting, committed fraud, and tried to murder her new boyfriend. "Never cheated" is a very low bar. Even the court orders him into psychological counseling.

As a kid watching this, it took me YEARS to not despise Sally Field because of exactly this. Felt like she was intentionally ruining her family and wasn’t ever even home. They were doing quite fine for him to be a stay at home dad but her hubris got in the way. You can’t even tell a man is dressed as a woman nannying your children day in and day out? She is awful.

Robin's William's character was an overgrown child that just made her life harder every chance he got. He never cared about his kids as a father but as a playmate and his wife was the only adult at home.

I've thought this for years. This movie felt like a veiled anti-husband/father movie that, I'm guessing, fueled a lot of women to divorce their husbands.

Seeing this as an adult made me realize something: She wanted a divorce so she can date Pierce Brosnan. Selfish slut.

I recently watched this movie for this first time since 1993 and I couldn’t believe how horrible she was!! I didn’t notice it when I was a kid.
