ALERT: Police use a drone to catch suspects in the act of trying to steal a car from a mall parking lot in Dearborn, Michigan. The suspects were in a stolen Kia when they tried stealing another car, which was captured on camera. A Flock License Plate Reader caught the plate of a stolen Kia, and within seconds, the department's Drone First Responder unit deployed a Skydio police drone. At the same time, they used access to a live feed from their Real Time Information Center. Upon the vehicle pulling into a parking spot in the Foreman Mills parking lot, one of the suspects is seen trying to break into another vehicle as police arrive. After a short chase on foot, the officers apprehended the suspects with no reported injuries. Drone First Responder Helps Officers Catch Shoplifting Suspect On June 17 at approximately 7:45 p.m., Arvada Police received a report from a loss prevention officer of an active shoplifting incident at the Target near 78th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. When confronted by store security, the suspect fled east on foot. Fortunately, our Drone First Responder (DFR) program was already in the air and quickly located the suspect, tracking his movements to a nearby Arby’s at 80th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. Responding officers arrived and were able to safely identify and contact the suspect inside the restaurant. During the investigation, officers discovered the suspect had an active arrest warrant and was allegedly responsible for stealing more than $340 worth of merchandise from the store. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to jail. The Drone First Responder program continues to provide officers with real-time information, helping improve response times and safely resolve incidents throughout our community.

Having sat through plenty of city council meetings on Flock and similar technologies, I’ve noticed the same pattern again and again. Much of the organized opposition comes from police abolitionists, including activists tied to DSA, FRSO, and even CPUSA. But last night in Columbus, Police Chief Elaine Bryant laid out what Flock has actually helped officers accomplish. • identify suspects in a double homicide • arrest a 15-year-old murder suspect within 18 hours • recover a kidnapped 3-year-old and make three arrests within hours • locate an armed shooting suspect who fled to Sandusky • track suspects in an armed robbery • recover an abducted child unharmed • locate two missing people with dementia Bryant was hardly arguing for unchecked surveillance. She explicitly called for “accountability, education and transparency” in how Flock is used. When the loudest critics also want to abolish policing, it is fair to ask whether the real objection is safeguards or simply giving police an effective tool.

As soon as someone dials 911, officers in the field receive an immediate alert, the caller’s GPS location, and instant live one-way audio of the conversation between the caller and the communications center. This gives our officers real-time awareness of the situation—before the call is even dispatched—and allows for a faster, more informed response. We’ll know someone needs help even sooner, allowing us to respond more quickly and be on scene when every second counts. In just two weeks, Live 911 through our Flock Safety – Safe City Initiative will be fully implemented across the entire department. We're constantly working to enhance safety and raise the level of service we deliver to our community—and this is another example of what’s possible through the strong support of our residents and City leaders. On Wednesday, July 1, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a suspect entered the Community Banks of Colorado branch located at 7530 Grandview Avenue and announced, “This is a robbery.” The suspect also made statements indicating there could be guns and additional people involved. The Arvada Police Department's Drone First Responder (DFR) program quickly deployed a drone to the scene. The drone provided officers with real-time intelligence, allowing them to observe the suspect through the bank's front windows and entrance. This information enabled officers to safely establish a perimeter around the bank and wait for the suspect to exit, reducing the risk of a potential hostage situation. After receiving money from bank employees, the suspect moved toward the front door. Once the DFR pilot advised officers that the suspect was exiting the building, officers immediately contacted and arrested him without incident. The suspect was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of Aggravated Robbery and is awaiting formal charges through the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office. The Arvada Police Department would like to commend the bank employees and patrons for remaining calm and composed during a frightening situation. Their actions, combined with the coordinated response of responding officers and the Drone First Responder team, helped bring the incident to a safe resolution.

Date: 19 September 2026 THREE SUSPECTS LINKED TO A MURDER CASE IN ESTHER PARK-BEHIND BARS CITY OF EKURHULENI _On Wednesday 16 September 2026 at approximately 16h20, a 41-year-old male was fatally shot, at an intersection of Parklands and Cawood Streets, in Esther Park. The suspects fled the scene in a blue VW Jetta 5 sedan and a case of murder, was opened at the Sebenza police station, for further investigations. Upon verification, the getaway vehicle, was found to be linked to two (2) other cases of hijacking and murder. Following credible information received, a joint intelligence-driven operation, was activated comprising the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Northern Region Task Team, South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence, and Blue Hawks Security personnel. Within 24 hours of the incident, the team worked tirelessly to track and intercept the suspects. One suspect, was apprehended in the Spartan area, while two (2) other suspects, were arrested at the Enhlanzeni Hostel, together with the vehicle, used in commission of the crime. One (1) suspect led Officers to a house, at the Allandale Farm in Mayibuye, where a Beretta pistol with a filed-off serial number and 17 rounds of live ammunition, believed to have been used in the murder, was recovered. The three (3) suspects have been detained and will face charges of 'possession of a suspected hijacked/robbed motor vehicle, murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition'. The Chief of Police, Mr. IJ Mapiyeye, has commended the Officers for their swift response, dedication, and collaborative effort that led to the arrests. The City of Ekurhuleni wishes to send a clear and stern warning to all perpetrators of crime. Ekurhuleni is not a haven for criminal activity. The Dallas Police Department’s new Drone as First Responder program officially launched today with eight remotely piloted drones based at Dallas Fire-Rescue stations across the City of Dallas. These drones are operated out of the Fusion/Real Time Crime Center and are designed to respond to calls for service in a two-mile radius from their base station. The base locations were selected based on heat maps of calls for service for both police and fire, placing them where they can potentially respond to the greatest number of calls. The pilots will be able to get to the scene quicker than in a squad car and begin to provide real-time intelligence and feedback to officers, as well as reduce the level of response or clear a call entirely if the incident has resolved. If a pilot sees a call in a drone’s response area where aerial intelligence can enhance officer safety, they can deploy a drone to provide critical updates to officers at the scene. Each drone is equipped with a thermal camera to help during nighttime operations, as well as a loudspeaker to make announcements to individuals on the ground. “I challenged our team to find innovative ways to continue improving our response times, and this new drone unit will not only keep officers free to respond to more calls, but provide real time updates as they are responding to calls,” said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. “Even during our training, our pilots were able to clear three holding calls in an hour with one drone. That alone proved their value to us, and I’m looking forward to seeing the benefits in both officer safety and response times.” Our public safety partners at Dallas Fire-Rescue will also be utilizing the Drone as First Responder program, with training for pilots underway. Technology + teamwork = quick results Just a few weeks ago, officers arrested a burglary suspect in less than an hour thanks to a vigilant neighbor, the Real Time Information Center (RTIC) and APD's Drones as First Responders program. The incident began when a neighbor reported seeing a man enter a home's backyard and leave with a bicycle. Using live camera technology, RTIC quickly located a suspect matching the description riding a bicycle that matched the one reported stolen. Drone technology and real-time updates allowed officers to continuously track the suspect's movements, directing officers to his location within minutes. When officers contacted the suspect, he abandoned the bicycle and tried to run. But we were faster. Officers quickly took him into custody, recovered the stolen bike and other property taken from the residence, and arrested him on probable cause of theft, trespassing and obstructing. This case is another example of how APD's technology, combined with community members who report suspicious activity, helps officers locate suspects quickly, recover stolen property and keep our community safe. Last week, APD officers tracking a stolen vehicle were attacked by several minor-aged criminal offenders. More than 20 rounds of gunfire were fired at our officers, prompting a multi-jurisdictional pursuit that traveled through portions of Aurora and Denver. Today, we are sharing some of the body-worn camera video from the incident. The Aurora Police Department commends the actions of our officers, as well as our partners from the Denver Police Department, who displayed the utmost poise and professionalism while responding without hesitation to a violent and life-threatening situation. Ultimately, four teenage suspects were taken into custody without a use of force. Several firearms believed to be used in the attack on our officers were also recovered. The suspects, aged 15 and 16, are not being identified because they are minors. They all have now been formally charged with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, and one count each of aggravated motor vehicle theft and second-degree burglary, among other charges. #CommunityCommitment #APDInAction
