Let's take a look at history. 1. The Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) & Light Rail (2012–2014) The Promise: In line with Vision 2030, the government initially proposed a modern light rail network to span multiple corridors, including the CBD-Ruiru and JKIA routes. Outcome: The light rail network never came to fruition. However, the government did manage to initiate a new surface line to Syokimau, which was launched by the president in November 2012. Failed. 2. The Nairobi Commuter Rail Revitalisation & DMUs (2018–2020) The Promise: The government consistently promised a multi-billion-dollar overhaul of the deteriorating railway lines, which would include newly constructed stations at Dandora, Mwiki, Githurai, and Kahawa. Outcome: This was one of the rare occasions where a near-launch actually occurred. In November 2020, then-President Uhuru Kenyatta officially launched the modernised Nairobi Commuter Rail Service and a fleet of imported Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) operating on the existing surface tracks. Failed. 3. The Nairobi Railway City Masterplan (2022) The Promise: The state presented an ambitious multi-billion "Railway City" project in Nairobi’s CBD, intending to integrate trains, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, and walkways to accommodate up to 30,000 passengers per hour. Outcome: Despite highly publicised groundbreakings and launch events signalling the start of its first phase, the full implementation of this mixed-use precinct remains in progressive planning stages with only piecemeal construction taking place. Failed. And now: 4. The First Underground Metro System (July 2026) The Promise: The latest significant proposal was unveiled in July 2026, when Governor Johnson Sakaja’s cabinet approved an ambitious KSh 1 trillion ($7.78 billion) Nairobi Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit System. This project promises to take high-capacity trains beneath the CBD and connect seamlessly to Eastlands. Outcome: Marketed as a shift “from planning to implementation,” the project was set to receive National Government cabinet backing, pending public participation forums and official groundbreakings. We all know this is going to be a very big scandal. How do you trust this guy, and yet you know who he answers to?
