Guess which original Atari 2600 game sold more copies than any other. If your mind went to Pitfall! (1982, by David Crane) then you'd have been correct. For those arguing "but, but... Pac Man?" - that was originally an arcade game and later ported to the Atari 2600. Pitfall! topped the billboard charts for a whopping 64 consecutive weeks, that's well over a whole year. And to give you an idea how popular the game was at its peak: Try to picture 14,000 fan letters (per week!), many with hand-drawn maps of the jungle. Activision, the publisher, had to hire extra staff just to handle the mail. If that's not an indicator of pop culture impact, I don't know what is. By the way, Pitfall was 4 kilobytes big... that's a tiny fraction of any static desktop icon on your PC these days. David Crane got the absolute maximum (and a bit beyond) out of the good old Atari 2600.
