No. This scene was not improvised, but the hammer near Paul Dano's face wasn't in the screenplay and that was the moment everyone freaked out on set.

He delivers a performance that feels carved out of fear. It’s one of those performances lingers long after the screen goes dark. Hugh Jackman avoided rehearsing emotional peaks. He didn’t want his breakdowns to feel planned. Many of Keller’s most devastating moments were shaped on set.
