An Alliance MLA has been ejected from the Stormont Assembly chamber after a row with the deputy speaker in which she accused him of “patronising” her. North Belfast MLA Nuala McAllister removed herself from the chamber after a request from the UUP’s Steve Aiken on Tuesday morning, the second day of the Assembly sitting after summer recess. The Alliance MLA later said the deputy speaker needed to “look at the way that you speak to many of the women in this chamber”.

For the first five years, she remained silent, then used a speech interface with a robotic voice. After 20 years, technology allowed her children to hear her voice again. A London-based company specializing in technologies for people with disabilities created a personal audio interface based on an old VHS recording.
