Today in Rock History April 5, 1984 MTV partnered with Van Halen to create one of the most infamous rock-and-roll contests in music history: The Lost Weekend with Van Halen. As part of the promotional campaign for their 1984 album, the band invited fans to send in postcards for a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The winner would join Van Halen on their tour, party with the band backstage, and live like a rock star for 48 hours for two shows on the 4th and 5th of April. The contest gathered massive attention receiving over a million entries. The winner was 20-year-old Kurt Jeffries from Pennsylvania. Jeffries and a friend were flown to Detroit, where they were thrown headfirst into the hedonistic world of 1980s Van Halen. The prize lived up to its “lost weekend” moniker: limo rides, all-access passes, backstage partying with the band, and non-stop drinking. MTV filmed much of the chaos, airing highlights of the debauchery, including scenes of Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth reveling in their rock-god personas.
