With gratitude and sadness, I pay tribute to my uncle Thiru P Sabanayagam who passed peacefully, aged 101, the afternoon of 22 June. I was in London, in transit to Chennai from New York when I received the sad news. Upon landing in Chennai on the 23rd, I went to offer my condolences and pay my respects in person. He lived a full life: we had celebrated his 100th birthday last June. In his 33-year-long, illustrious career as a civil servant, he had worked as a Secretary and Chief Secretary in the Governments of the erstwhile Madras State and the current state of Tamil Nadu under four Chief Ministers: Perunthalaivar Kamaraj, my Grand-Uncle Thiru M. Bhaktavatsalam, Perarignar Anna and Thalaivar Kalaignar (1971 to 1975). He retired as Secretary, Union Ministry of Education and Culture in 1980. As we bid farewell to him, we remember his many accomplishments and the stellar legacy that set the benchmark on how Senior Officers should function. At a personal level, he was a great source of strength and confidence over the years, irrespective of my chosen career at the time. I have often marvelled at his wry sense of humour and boundless energy—he stayed active until the day of his passing. He lived a controlled and disciplined life, generously imparting the wealth of his wisdom and experience to people in the family and beyond. I remain grateful for all the love and advice, and the unfailing affection I’ve received from him through all the years, and am thankful to be able to pay my last respects in person in this brief span before leading a delegation from the IT Department on an official trip to Australia. A day later, I also had the honour and privilege of accompanying our Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru M.K.Stalin, who reminisced of the bond between Thalaivar Kalaignar and his Chief Secretary (at the time of the declaration of Emergency (MISA Act) in 1975), during his visit to pay homage.

However, 2 days ago, he expunged & removed parts of the speech of Leader of Opposition Kharge ji where he'd criticized the RSS. It is well-documented fact that the RSS is an organization that has been banned in the past for subversive activities. It is a communal organization and also, for the longest time, refused to accept the Constitution of India. Is it fair for the VP of India to be openly praising the RSS while sitting in a chair where he's expected to be neutral? It is extremely concerning and DANGEROUS that criticism of the RSS even by MPs is now being banned under the Modi Govt because the Chairman is a proud member of the RSS which he has openly admitted.

He had been hospitalized twice within a span of a few days and his health was rapidly declining. He chose to save himself and entered rehab, successfully completing the program in November, 1986. At the time of his death in 1990, Stevie was almost four years sober when he tragically lost his life ina helicopter crash. While performing "Life Without You" in New Orleans, 1988, Stevie gave a powerful speech to the audience about his sobriety and the dangers that drugs caused him.
