DeepSeek-R1 shattered the assumption that performant AI models must be built closed source with loss-leading computational costs. This is the reality that Web3 x Crypto firms have been waiting for, leading me to believe that the most performant AI models in the future will be built on-chain. Resource Requirements DeepSeek R1 (671 billion parameters), which took over a billion dollars, 2,000 Nvidia H800 GPUs, and over 55 days, beat benchmarks held by OpenAI’s o1 mode (near 2 trillion parameters)l, which required hundreds of billions of dollars to develop along with over 16,000 advanced GPUs. The idea that AI models must be closed-source and have loss-leading computational costs to succeed is crumbling. The Existing Decentralized AI Narrative AI x Crypto projects believed that crowdsourced, public, decentralized AI would eventually create better models than their centralized counterparts. This had thus far not been true, as the highest-performing models had come from closed-source companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Crypto x AI companies have adapted to this by specializing in infrastructure rather than model-building. For example, GPU marketplaces like , The Render Network, io.net, and Exabits have developed sustainable revenues. Companies that allow users to share their network bandwidth like touch grass and Gradient have found their niche in supplying services, like distributed web scraping, to web2 clients. Storage networks like Arweave Ecosystem, Filecoin, and Ocean Protocol have also done well by being the platform on which these projects are built. It cost me $15 on the Epic Games Store and a few million AI tokens to build this web-native grass simulation. Demo in the comments. Epic Games owns Quixel, a collection of high-quality Megascans. You can use them in Three.js, which is exactly what we did in this demo. The butterflies, flowers, and surfaces all come from Megascans. The long grass and wind simulation were converted from Blender Geometry Nodes simulations, which is why it feels so good. Then add an HDRI, set up the lighting, and boom—you have highly realistic grass rendered fully on the web. While it’s something built with AI, a non-designer without a certain set of skills would never be able to do this. You still need the knowledge, terminology, and understanding required to glue all these technologies together.

You can now find anything in a video based on the contents of its frames, not just transcripts or tags. Over the last several months, the Grass Foundation has quietly assembled one of the largest video datasets in history: over a billion videos from across the public web, and is segmenting them by scene with VLM annotations of keyframes. This dataset is now searchable, so you can find the exact moment a visual, pattern, or concept appears. Curation has always been the bottleneck in video analysis. We built a system that automates it. This is just the beginning. Over 4 billion additional videos are queued for processing, and the index is growing daily. We’re opening access to a limited set of collaborators. If you’re a researcher, journalist, or nonprofit working with video, archives, or large-scale analysis, we’d love to hear from you.

I like to call this "web-scrapping on demand", and I'm pretty sure it's going to unlock unlimited power for AI applications. I recorded a quick video to show you how you can do this using Apify. I've talked about them before, and they are collaborating with me on this post. They have one of the best open-source web scraping and browser automation libraries out there: But it gets much better than this! You can use MCP to connect your AI Agents and applications to the Apify platform and use any specialized actor on demand to scrape and process online data. In the video, I used Cursor to scrape LinkedIn posts with the words "Machine Learning" in real time. Worked like a charm with no code needed!
