But that doesn’t explain how you win 9 Grammy’s, co-found Def Jam, and help produce hits in every genre from Rock to Rap to Pop over 30+ years. “The most important music producer in the past 20 years” - MTV Rick calling himself a ‘reducer’ rather than a ‘producer’ is a good hint at his genius. But that sounds so general. What does it actually mean? You ask and the youtube gods giveth us an example: Check out this video below of Jay Z recording with Rick. Rick tells him “maybe we start acapella” (no beat, no background vocals, no sound effects). That became the iconic intro to the song 99 Problems.
