We've seen an angry Superman a couple of times, but an angry Clark Kent......one of the things I like and found interesting about this scene is that Clark doesn't use his name, he announces himself to the guy as "John Kent's father; Lois Lane's husband." His name didn't matter, just his relationship with the people that guy hurt, so that the man knew exactly what got him into that situation."

For who’s not a Superman fan, they might miss how important this tidbit is, but for any true SUPERMAN fan or for the SMALLVILLE generation, hearing a major Hollywood director, head of a studio division, saying he “didn’t cast Lois and Clark, he cast CLOIS” feels so surreal, and once again makes absolute sense why JAMES GUNN is the guy for the job and we’ve been just wasting time before. He is CLEARLY a fan, he knows what is truly special about these characters and what’s important to the people who love those characters, and knows how there is no Clark without Lois and vice-versa. The usage of the acronym CLOIS in itself already blew my mind, that’s how fans talk about and shippers refer to the Clark & Lois as a power couple, specially in the SMALLVILLE forums era. After seeing the trailer I had already 100% certainty he is delivering the SUPERMAN we always dreamed about. But after seeing the interviews from the day he presented the trailer, I’m literally like WHY IS HE DIRECTING SUPERMAN ONLY NOW??? HE WAS THE GUY FROM THEY ONE, we just didn’t know it. We could have avoided so much if he had picked Superman instead of TSS back in 2018… but oh well, maybe we had to face whatever we faced and see the previous universe implode so a fresh take could really take flight. And I’m here for it!!!

John Huston on working with Clark Gable in "The Misfits" (1961): "One of the myths attached to 'The Misfits' was that Clark Gable d!ed of a heart attack because of over-exertion in this film. That is utter nonsense. Toward the end of the picture there was a contest between Clark and the stallion the cowboys had captured. It looked like rough work, and it was, but it was the stunt men who were thrown around, not Clark. I got on well with Clark. I spent many hours with him in his trailer— thanks to Marilyn. He thought of himself as an actor, not a screen personality. He liked reminiscing about his early days in the theater—old-time actors’ talk. I saw very soon that Clark knew exactly what he was doing. Two or three times I thought I saw ways to improve his performance. I was mistaken. Each time I had him go back to his own way. He was nonplussed by Marilyn’s behavior. It was as though she’d revealed some horrid fact of life that just couldn’t be accepted in his scheme of things. Because I edit as I go along, Clark got to see the first cut of the film, and he was delighted. The picture was way over budget. It would cost about $4,000,000—and that was a lot of money in those days for a black- and-white film. Clark said, “Hell, John! Oddly enough, #Lanterns is making me more peeved at Gunn’s decision to make Superman around Corenswet’s age. Because if the bulk of this season takes place in 2016… wtf was Clark doing at 21 years old?? Still SIX YEARS before he introduced himself to the world as Superman! Was he just The Blur like he was in Smallville? Was he just in college to become a journalist? For the time being, I’m just gonna assume he has Christopher Reeve’s origin. Leaves home for the first time after graduating high school to find the fortress of solitude in the Antarctica. Then he spends roughly like 10-12 years there training and honing his abilities before embracing the world as Superman.

He is buoyant, basking in the attention, until he sees his brother from Sicily walk in. His brother gives him a disapproving look. In that moment he realizes that to testify against the Corleone would mean going against his own family as well, which is a bridge too far. He realizes that his deal with the government is done, and that he is most certainly a dead man. He accepts it with grace and does what he needs to do. At the end of the scene, Tom leans over to the brother and says “La famiglia è tutto,” or “The family is everything.” The family unit is the strongest force in nature. It’s something I don’t want my kids to ever forget.

This scene adds so much to Boromir's death. He left a place where he was hailed as a hero, but perhaps also the lone hope of a country trapped in the shadow of Mordor. And if that evil is unleashed in full, Gondor will receive its wrath first. The weight of the burden he carries is tremendous from that alone. Add to that a doting father of whom he is both wary and weary, and a brother whom he loves and has to leave with that same father. From all of that he comes to Rivendell, a stranger, and from a country that represents man more than any other. And remember, "Men are weak." They allowed the Enemy to live on through that weakness. Nobody trusts them, therefore nobody trusts Boromir. And as it turns out, he is weak indeed. The Ring plays upon his despair. Tempts him to bring the quest to ruin in its earliest days. And perhaps the one person in whom he might find hope, Aragorn, spurns him and Gondor entirely. And then his weakness causes his greatest failure, as he tries to take the Ring for himself. But then he sees his error in his moment of greatest failure, and rather than succumbing to that failure, he rises and defends the Fellowship, defends the friends of the one he tried to harm, and friends of his own whom he had grown close to during the journey. He takes three arrows for these friends, and then, as he lay dying, Aragorn honors him and gives him hope that perhaps Gondor might be saved after all. And whether Boromir realized it or not before he died, Aragorn's resolve to become that man, to become the King of Gondor, starts with honoring a man who showed the weakness he feared, and yet overcame it in the end. He shatters the bridge with his staff not like in the film and sacrifices his life to stop it. Because of this, he’s sent back by Eru Ilúvatar as Gandalf the White to finish his task. 🧙‍♂️
