She let the car roll down the boat ramp into the water, then stood on the shore as it sank with her sons inside. Later that night, Susan appeared at a nearby house, hysterical, claiming a Black man had carjacked her at a traffic light and driven off with her sons still in the car. She described the supposed carjacker in detail and gave public interviews alongside her husband, pleading for the boys’ safe return. For nine days, a massive search ensued. National media closely followed her emotional pleas. But inconsistencies in her story and evidence from her car and tracks near the lake led investigators to suspect foul play. On November 3, 1994, Susan confessed to the crime. She led police to the lake, where divers found the submerged car with her sons’ bodies still strapped in their seats.

Susan was arrested and charged with two counts of murder. At her trial in July 1995, the defense presented her history of depression and past sexual abuse, while the prosecution focused on her motive to remove her children to pursue a relationship.
