Zambian government of President Hakainde #Hichilema has now arrested and detained his main political rival and opposition leader, Brian #Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, as authorities intend to charge them with an “alleged ‌offence ⁠of treason.” Police, who grilled them for the entire day, have not publicly detailed the conduct they allege constitutes treason, nor have they disclosed what evidence prompted the investigation. Mundubile failed to file a presidential election petition challenging President Hichilema’s victory following the state’s unprecedented order to shut down courts across the country for “security reasons.” The courts are now fully operational. Mundubile, who has been living under diplomatic sanctuary, challenged President Hichilema in the just-concluded presidential election. Hichilema has since been declared the winner and will be sworn in Tuesday next week. Treason charges are frequently a focal point of political friction in Zambia, often brought up against high-profile opposition leaders. Prior to becoming President, Hichilema was detained and charged with treason following a political standoff involving his failure to yield to President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade. At the time, he was the leader of Zambia’s main opposition, challenging President Lungu. He spent more than 100 days in a high-security prison while awaiting trial. The leading Zambian opposition leader and presidential candidate, Brian Mundubile, has alleged that President Hakainde Hichilema sent the military to polling stations and that soldiers are now tampering with ballot papers. In a statement issued this afternoon, Mr Mundubile said his party had received reports that members of the military had taken control of certain polling centres and that ballot forms were allegedly being removed. “We have received reports that members of the military have taken control of certain polling centres and that ballot forms are allegedly being removed. These reports must be addressed immediately,” he said. Mr Mundubile said the military and security services have no role in interfering with or tampering with electoral materials that carry the sovereign decision made by the Zambian people. NKOMBO RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT HICHILEMA'S ALLEGATIONS, URGES SUPPORTERS TO STAY FOCUSED By Helga Chibwe Former Local Government and Rural Development Minister and former Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Gary Nkombo has dismissed allegations made against him by President Hakainde Hichilema during a rally in Mazabuka this afternoon. Mr Nkombo said he has every right to contest the parliamentary seat as an independent candidate, citing Article 51 of the Constitution of Zambia, which allows eligible candidates to stand as independents. He also refuted President Hichilema's claims that he is working with NRPUP President Brian Mundubile because of the candle symbol on his campaign materials. Mr Nkombo explained that he did not choose or create the symbol, stating that it was allocated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ). Responding to the President's other remarks, Mr Nkombo said he would not address them, describing them as abusive and lacking truth. As they create chaos and keep the opposition fighting for their lives, they go after those with GEN 20s to revise them. Mr. Hakainde sent the army to round up Brian Mundubile and his entourage. In this clip, Brian Mundubile recounts the harrowing ordeal. I have learned with great distress that the army broke the windows, ransacked the entire house, and found them in the master bedroom. There, they discovered Mutotwe Kafwaya cowering in a corner and shot him twice. It is unclear whether he is still alive. They then turned on Brian and opened fire. News has it that Brian Mundubile and his family are still being held by the army. That phone call is one of Hakainde’s tricks, and Brian was speaking to EMV under duress—this was done to avoid public backlash. Listen to the full narration here.
