Increasing minimum wage could mean “more jobs can be created” Oliver Bracebridge-Henderson, 18, a pub worker and youth parliament member, tells #PoliticsLive more disposable income would encourage him to go out more

He makes the case for raising the voting age back to 21 instead of dropping it to 16 very well.

What a fucking idiot.

Nice dream, but it misunderstands labor markets. Paying higher wages for the same job leads to less hiring and greater selectivity. That selectivity disproportionately harms young workers, whose limited experience lowers their perceived value to employers. This effect is especially damaging to young people, because early job experience is often a critical factor in establishing a strong long term career trajectory. That dynamic is why prestigious internships can always attract exceptional candidates even with little to no pay. The claim that higher imposed wages increase disposable income is backward. When fewer people are employed, average income will fall. Only those fortunate enough to secure jobs benefit from artificially elevated wages, at the direct expense of their unemployed and underemployed peers. This is basic economics.

Youth parliament member. God help us if he becomes an MP.

Look at this fancy chap.

WTF? The BBC has just hit a new low by giving a platform to a new level of imbecile.

It's true that business needs consumers, but the idea that hard pressed pubs will benefit from higher costs because their employees may spend some of their windfall earnings on a pint is f*ing stupid.

where is this child's parents. why did they let it on the internet?

FFS lads, sort yourselves out.

end result of bbc media brainwashing the liberal youth

"Oliver Bracebridge-Henderson" > went to a 40k a yr private school > can't do better than a bar job > wants to educate me on politics ok

Total bullshit. This is juvenile economics. It's embarrassing how this garbage has been aired on the BBC.

At a certain point we need to address the total failure of our education system to address people like Ollie's ignorance of basic economics. "But he's so eloquent and passionate" isn't an excuse when he's simply ignorant.

How much is the Youth Parliament costing us, and how quickly can we get rid of it?

You take economic lessons from clowns now?

These people genuinely think that a minimum wage hike wouldn't effect the pub employees on them... They would get more money but everything else would stay the same! Increasing fixed costs are 100% guaranteed to raise the cost of services and this guys "go out more" dreams...

The minimum wage is £0

If you raise the cost of anything, fewer people will buy it. If you raise the cost of wages, fewer employers will hire. This isn't rocket science. Unemployment has dramatically increased under Labour because they've made everything more expensive.

He’s 18. He knows nothing about business. Yes he can go out more with more money but unemployment is 5.1% and rising due to labour increasing costs to employers and tying them up in restrictive legislation.

What on earth are they teaching at schools.

*double-barrelled surname klaxon*

Historians of the future will pinpoint the fall of Western civilisation to the over-correction on school bullying.

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the next Labour Chancellor....

They vote and the BBC gives them air time….

Jesus Christ. Both the BBC and the kid they are humiliating are culpable. Price goes up, supply increases but demand falls. The minimum wage is always zero.

LOL

Lmao, it literally makes hiring entry level workers prohibitively more expensive.

I'm embarrassed for him 😳🤦🏻♂️

Your economics is as fake as that bow-tie.

I wish more of you people would read The Forgotten Man by @AmityShlaes, or maybe just start with Economics in One Lesson, by Henry Hazlitt.

A prime example of why the youth parliament needs binning.
