Just eight years ago today, Alabama Football won its fifth national championship under Nick Saban in one of the most incredible, surprise-twist endings ever as the Crimson Tide stunned the Georgia Bulldogs, 26-23, in overtime on Jan. 8, 2018 inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who replaced two-year starter Jalen Hurts at halftime, threw a game-winning, 41-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith in walk-off fashion. The pass to DeVonta Smith atoned for a disastrous sack Tua. T 🇦🇸 had taken on the previous play that created a second-and-26 with Alabama trailing 23-20. Georgia jumped out to a 13-0 halftime lead that spurred the quarterback change from Saban at the start of the third quarter. Behind Tagovailoa, the Crimson Tide mounted its comeback and tied the game 20-20 with 3:49 remaining in regulation on touchdown passes to Henry Ruggs III and Calvin Ridley along with two field goals by Andy Pappanastos. Alabama had a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter, but Pappanastos missed a 36-yard field goal in the final seconds. In overtime, Georgia took its 23-20 lead on a 51-yard field goal by Rodrigo Blankenship.

In an unorthodox method 26 years ago today, Alabama Football won its 21st conference championship by using five quarterbacks and intercepting four passes as the No. 8-ranked Crimson Tide crushed the No. 5-ranked Florida Gators, 34-7, on Dec. 4, 1999 inside the Georgia Dome. Freddie Milons played wide receiver, quarterback and returned punts en route to his most valuable player performance in the SEC Championship Game. In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, he lined up under center, took the snap, started to run to his left before reversing direction for a 77-yard touchdown run to give Alabama a 22-7 lead. Alabama started Andrew Zow at quarterback and during the game used Tyler Watts, Milons, Luke Tucker and Jonathan Richey. The Crimson Tide defense forced four interceptions, three by Jesse Palmer, and held Florida to just 114 yards of total offense (83 passing, 31 rushing), the lowest in the Steve Spurrier era. Seconds after the touchdown run by Milons, Reggie Grimes intercepted a tipped pass from Palmer and returned it 38 yards for another score that pushed the Crimson Tide advantage to 28-7. Shaun Alexander finished the scoring with 3:58 remaining on a 7-yard touchdown run that completed the season sweep of the Gators. Earlier that year, Alabama traveled to Gainesville and left with a wild 40-39 overtime victory. The Crimson Tide led 12-7 at halftime on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Zow to Jason McAddley and two Ryan Pflugner field goals (29 and 48 yards).

For those that had the privilege to see the greatness of linebacker Derrick Thomas in person, they will remember the significance of what happened 37 years ago when the Alabama Football legend ensured the Crimson Tide would not lose in an 8-3 victory over Penn State on Oct. 22, 1988, inside Legion Field. Thomas terrorized Penn State’s Tony Sacca all afternoon and finished with three sacks, nine quarterback hurries, eight tackles and almost outscored the Nittany Lions by himself with a fourth-quarter safety. Led by the heroic performance, the Crimson Tide defense allowed just 21 yards in the second half. In the 1988 season, Thomas won the Butkas Award as the nation’s top linebacker and finished with a staggering 27 sacks. To put that in perspective, Alabama as a team had 25 sacks last season with one extra game. “We made some changes at halftime to free Derrick Thomas,” Alabama head coach Bill Curry said. “Once Derrick Thomas is flying around, all kinds of things happen. They start looking for him. It’s a real nightmare when there’s a player like that on the other team.” CBS televised the defensive slugfest and announcer Brent Musburger described Thomas’s afternoon as, “the most dominating performance I’ve ever seen by a college player.” Philip Doyle scored the only offensive points for Alabama with a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter, before giving the Crimson Tide a 6-3 lead with a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter. Thomas added his safety early in the fourth quarter and a late quarterback hurry ended Penn State’s final offensive series when Lee Ozmint intercepted Sacca. A number of you have asked about the call at the end of the 1st Half of the Bethel Football game at NCC Football in which there was a potential fumble/TD wiped off the board for Bethel that eventually led to no score by the Royals. The full play and a breakdown of issues with the call are in the video below. To be clear, though: 1) It appears that the receiver did not possess the ball at or past the NCC 8, which was needed for the 1st Down (the officials gave the ball to Bethel at the 8 after the overturn, awarding a 1st down). 2) It seems like the wing official was marking forward progress but may not have blown his whistle. It is unclear how he affected the overturn decision in the first place. What is clear is that the officials on the field awarded a fumble and TD, meaning they did not rule forward progress had been stopped. As a result, this aspect of the play is NOT reviewable by rule, as it is a judgment call in real time. 3) No TD should have been awarded before the review in the first place, as the ball clearly was fumbled to the lineman, and fumbles on 4th down in college football can only be advanced by the fumbling player. The ball would have been marked at the spot of the fumble in that case. 4) The officials missed a clear Roughing the Passer call, as the NCC defender went for the Bethel QB's legs while he was in his passing stance. This would have been a half-the-distance and automatic-first-down foul. If this play was called correctly in the first place, it should have been called dead with forward progress stopped at the 8 1/2 yard line and the Roughing foul pushing the ball to the 4 1/4 yard line, 1st & Goal Bethel, with the clock stopped due to penalty. No matter what, though, the Roughing penalty would have ensured Bethel had the ball closer to the goal with 16 seconds left (when forward progress stoppage should have been called). Frisco ISD has 12 schools but 0 have won a #uilstate football title. Lone Star is the only 1 to make a final losing in 2015 to Cedar Park. Jeff Rayburn has waited 10 years to get FLS back to the final. He graciously took a few minutes to talk. Scroll down to learn more about FLS! They scored 58 on Dallas Highland Park in the quarterfinals, the team SV beat in the final last year, and 56 on Aledo, the most ever given up by them in 163 playoff games. Ashton Jeanty, Nick Bolton, Jaylan Ford, Marvin Mims are all alums along with P.J. Washington of the Dallas Mavs. Frisco Lone Star does have state titles in girl's track (2013) & boy's soccer (2023). The school opened in 2010 the same year as SA Brennan meaning the school is 17 years younger than Larry Hill's tenure at Smithson Valley. The school is named after the 1996 movie Lone Star. Sometime in August 2022, during my final year at UNN, I was representing the school football team in the High Institutions Football League (HIFL). We had 25 registered players, and I worked relentlessly to hold down my position as the DMF throughout the tournament. I started and played every single game. When the final was announced and we were told it would be aired on DSTV, I told everyone I know, my family, my friends, my coursemates, my crush, that I’d be playing live on TV by 4 p.m. on Saturday. They all promised to tune in and watch me. Match day came, and we started on a high note. I was everywhere in midfield like Casemiro, breaking up play, winning tackles, dictating tempo. Then, barely 5 minutes into the game, I went in to dispossess an opponent and he blasted the ball straight into my John Thomas. That pain? One of the worst I’ve ever felt in my life. It was unbearable. To make matters worse, when the medical team arrived, all they could offer me was pure water. Meanwhile, my manhood felt like it was on fire and my stomach was cramping badly. I stepped out briefly for treatment, and our assistant coach looked at me and asked, “Pablochukwu, make I sub you?” I screamed, “No, sir I dey okay!” This was the biggest game of my life. My people were at home watching. I wasn’t about to leave them hanging. So I went back in and played the full 90 minutes in excruciating pain, but still delivered a masterclass. We won and I bagged my medal! Immediately we returned to UNN the next day, I ran straight to Hilltop to check if my thing is still working properly and after a little this and that. I confirmed everything was intact.

Some may call it an upset, but Chadron St simply calls it another day at the office, beating the #9/#11 Western CO Mountaineers on Saturday (11/8/25) in OT by a score of 27-24. Chadron got it done in all three phases of the game. The Eagles’ offense presented a balanced attack, gaining 111 yards and 2 TDs passing to go along with 148 yards and 1 TD rushing. The Eagles’ defense held the Mountaineers to a mere 38 yards rushing, had 7 tackles for loss, including 3 sacks, and came up with a fumble recovery and 2 interceptions. The most impressive part of Chadron’s team on Saturday had to be its special teams. The Eagles’ special teams blocked two field goal attempts and blocked a punt. Punter Brodie Eisenbraun stuck one punt inside the 5, drew a running into the punter penalty for a 1st down, and had an amazing run off of a high snap, which while it was not a 1st down, it shows what a stud he is. Then there is Kicker Wilson Yee. Yee made an impressive 50 yard FG in the 2nd quarter. Then, in OT, with ice in his veins, Yee made the biggest kick of his collegiate career, drilling a 47 yard FG to give the Eagles the win. I VEHEMENTLY disagree with Paul Finebaum’s criticism of Coach Deion Sanders, Sheduer Sanders and Colorado. He called them irrelevant and that they don’t matter to College Football. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Colorado is very relevant and broke TV viewership records last year even after their 3-0 start that saw them finish the year 4-8. They out drew some of the biggest brands in all of College Football last year. Their blowout loss to Oregon had 10.03 million viewers, which topped the Notre Dame-Ohio State game. Shedeur Sanders stated that Colorado is everyone’s Super Bowl game when they play them. HE IS CORRECT, if you take the time to understand what he meant. Every team that played Colorado last year played their hardest against them because they knew everyone was watching and it was their opportunity to shine in front of the masses. It wasn’t JUST ABOUT winning, they wanted to humiliate them and kill their confidence. It pains many that Coach Prime, his sons, Travis Hunter, his coaches and all his players are still walking in their purpose and have never wavered for a second. They know the mission they are on and won’t back down in the face of adversity. Colorado wasn’t an “Easy win” last year for anyone except Oregon and Washington State. 5 of their 8 losses were by one score or less. Colorado making the College Football Playoff AT SOME POINT in Deion Sanders’ tenure would be a great thing for College Football. Not just for the increased viewership, but because taking a program that last won a Conference Championship when Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter weren’t even born yet would be an incredible accomplishment and rebuild. Colorado doesn’t have to go to the College Football Playoff this year and will still be relevant. Teams will be jumping out of their skin to get after them a little extra because they think they are too confident. Coaches will up the passion because they believe they deserve the attention and eyeballs that Coach Prime and Colorado demand. Like Coach Prime said, he is analyzed different and his wins are measured differently. One thing is for sure though. Coach Prime is building something at Colorado and as an analyst, I don’t think we should be trying kick him and his team down because they are confident and believe in themselves. They are great for College Football because they are different. Different might make people uncomfortable, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
