Incredible view of inside #Melissa. Storms move counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere, so I had to ask Jim Cantore why this is spinning clockwise. His expert answer -- storms rotate 'counter' at the surface, and clockwise at the top as the flow evacuates the storm.

This swirling low-pressure storm is very nearly a Medicane, or Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone, and she could be on a trajectory to make landfall into the deserts of northern Libya soon. Notice the huge plume of dust on the eastern side of the storm getting pulled out to sea by the counter-clockwise circulation.

The "Ring Shout" is recognized as one of the oldest surviving African performance traditions, deeply rooted in the coastal Georgia and South Carolina lowcountry, including Savannah, where enslaved people maintained their Gullah/Geechee culture. It is a religious, dancelike movement performed in a counter-clockwise circle. Developed by enslaved Africans in the 18th and 19th centuries who merged West African traditions with American experiences, The ring shout evolved by blending African spiritual traditions with American Christian religious practices, such as spirituals. It combines singing, call-and-response, and a rhythmic, shuffling, "shouting" motion. The ring shout is still practiced today as part of the Gullah heritage in the region.

A whole train of big #solarstorms are on their way, along with some smaller storms hitting now, and some fast solar wind! It is an #aurora photographers dream starting now and lasting at least through the weekend. Right now, the biggest of the storms should hit late Thursday or early Friday morning and is well-represented in NOAA's prediction model. You can also get a 3D view of the coming solar storm in my earlier post. G3 to G4 storm levels are possible by Friday.

A bridge in the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica was swallowed by a swollen river on Tuesday as the eye of Hurricane Melissa closed in on the western coast of the country. According to See Jamaica, the channel that live streamed this footage, the bridge is a "vital link between Spanish Town and Linstead." Hurricane Melissa has since made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm. It is the most powerful hurricane to lash the island since record-keeping began 174 years ago and one of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded.
