The Hunting Dogs of the Night Sky 🐕🐩 #constellations 🌌 In the northern sky, the constellation of Canes Venatici, represents the loyal companions of the shepherd Boötes. Although it's not full of bright #stars, it hosts a diverse array of deep sky marvels. The brightest star, Cor Caroli (α CnV), has an apparent magnitude of 2.9 and serves as a lighthouse in this fairly dim constellation. 🔭 For us #stargazing and #astrophotography lovers, Canes Venatici offers a vast galactic display. Spring nights offer the best views, with the constellation well placed for observation after midnight. Using a telescope with an aperture of 100+mm will reveal the beauty of its deep sky objects, such as the Cat's Eye Galaxy, or the Cocoon galaxy, see my image below. A low-noise camera attached to your telescope can capture stunning images of these galaxies, with long exposure times revealing their spiral structures and companion interactions. ✨👀 When you look at Canes Venatici, you're looking back in time. The light from Cor Caroli has taken about 110 years to reach us, a journey that began on Earth in the early 1900s, an era marked by rapid industrialisation and the dawn of modern science and technology. It was during this period that the Wright brothers made their first flight, marking the beginning of the history of human flight. 🦣 Light from the deeper reaches of Canes Venatici has travelled much further, providing a glimpse into the distant past. For example, light from M94, began its journey to Earth 16 million years ago, during the Miocene epoch, when our planet was home to a rich diversity of large mammals, including early ancestors of elephants and the emergence of the first apes. These celestial observations connect us to a time when the Earth's landscapes were very different, teeming with life forms that laid the foundations for today's biodiversity.
