I believe every Indian should listen to Rakesh Kishor ji. He’s 71 years old, born in the 1950s, and what he’s saying reflects the story of Hindus in India from 1947 to 2025. Though I’m much younger than him, but I deeply relate to his words. At some point in life, many of us begin to feel that Hindus in India have been consistently deceived and betrayed by the system. What has been happening to Hindus over the past 75 years is deeply concerning. They have been reduced to second-class or rather, fourth-class citizens in their own country. India, today, feels like a ticking time bomb of suppressed Hindu resentment, and when it finally bursts, the outcome may be beyond anyone’s control.

Until the 1950s, the staple food of the majority of Indians, both in the north and south, was millets. A 70 year old Sikh traveller I met 27 years ago told me that when he was my age, the daily diet of people in northern India comprised millets; wheat was consumed only during festivals; and rice was given to the sick and convalescing.

Rescuing Nalanda's famous library. Scholars from Tibet, China, Cambodia, Mongolia, and other places regularly visited Nalanda University to translate the books in its library. This is a precious collection of India's original knowledge that was highly sought after by everyone in the world. Later on, Muslim invaders burned down the entire library of Nalanda. When the Dalai Lama came from Tibet to India in the 1950s, he brought back several hundred Tibetan translations of these works. Infinity Foundation Infinity Foundation gave a grant to Columbia University 20 years ago to translate into English some of the most important books in Nalanda University that were burned by Muslim invaders centuries ago. That project has continued since then as a result of our foundation's historic role in the revival of Indian knowledge.

Bomb sites, rationing which lasted until 1954, and severe housing shortages still shaped daily life, yet it was also regaining momentum as one of the world’s financial and trading capitals. The economy combined traditional docks, manufacturing, and rail hubs with the rapidly expanding banking and insurance sector in the City, while new welfare state policies improved public housing and healthcare. Demographically it was still overwhelmingly white British, but the decade marked the beginning of large scale Commonwealth migration, especially arrivals from the Caribbean such as the Empire Windrush generation, along with smaller numbers from South Asia and Africa that gradually transformed neighborhoods like Brixton and Notting Hill. At the same time Britain remained formally an imperial power, yet the empire was visibly dissolving. India had already gained independence, African and Asian colonies were moving toward independence, and the 1956 Suez Crisis symbolized that London was shifting from imperial capital to the center of a shrinking Commonwealth and a more domestically focused nation.

J. Robert Oppenheimer is credited with being the father of the atomic bomb. When he witnessed the first nuclear explosion in the deserts of New Mexico in the USA on July 16, 1945, by his own admission he immediately thought of a verse from the Bhagavad Gita “ Now I become Death destroyer of the worlds”. This is a reference to Chapter 11, Verse 32. Virtually all translations of the word “Kaala” in this verse render it as “Time” or “the eternal Time-Spirit”. But Oppenheimer used “Kaala” to mean “Death”. This is because he had studied Sanskrit in the early 1930s at the University of California at Berkeley under Arthur Ryder whose translation of the Bhagavad Gita had appeared in 1929. It was Ryder who had translated Kaala as Death. Incidentally, Bakhtiar Dadabhoy in his recent biography of Homi Bhabha writes that when Oppenheimer was under attack in the early 1950s for his communist leanings Bhabha after consulting Nehru sounded him out on immigrating to India. There is really no conclusive archival evidence for this, but Bhabha may well have verbally sounded Oppenheimer out. But ironically, Bernard Peters, who was betrayed as a communist by Oppenheimer to the American authorities in 1949, was invited by Bhabha to TIFR in 1951. Peters made very important scientific contributions in cosmic rays and nuclear research at TIFR before emigrating to Denmark. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1985.

When he witnessed the first nuclear explosion in the deserts of New Mexico in the USA on July 16, 1945, by his own admission he immediately thought of a verse from the Bhagavad Gita “ Now I become Death destroyer of the worlds”. This is a reference to Chapter 11, Verse 32. Virtually all translations of the word “Kaala” in this verse render it as “Time” or “the eternal Time-Spirit”. But Oppenheimer used “Kaala” to mean “Death”. This is because he had studied Sanskrit in the early 1930s at the University of California at Berkeley under Arthur Ryder whose translation of the Bhagavad Gita had appeared in 1929. It was Ryder who had translated Kaala as Death. Incidentally, Bakhtiar Dadabhoy in his recent biography of Homi Bhabha writes that when Oppenheimer was under attack in the early 1950s for his communist leanings Bhabha after consulting Nehru sounded him out on immigrating to India. There is really no conclusive archival evidence for this, but Bhabha may well have verbally sounded Oppenheimer out. But ironically, Bernard Peters, who was betrayed as a communist by Oppenheimer to the American authorities in 1949, was invited by Bhabha to TIFR in 1951. Peters made very important scientific contributions in cosmic rays and nuclear research at TIFR before emigrating to Denmark. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1985.
