She was also alleged to have exploited her through excessive working hours and wages far below the US minimum. When Sangeeta complained to US authorities about the abuse and exploitation, Devyani was arrested and prosecuted by American prosecutors on charges of visa fraud and making false statements. The UPA government turned the incident into a major diplomatic row and retaliated against US diplomats in India by removing security barricades outside the US Embassy in New Delhi, withdrawing airport passes and privileges for US diplomats and their families, and taking other reciprocal measures.
