Nun (7,135 m), Kargil The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has successfully conducted a landmark achievement in the Force’s mountaineering history by completing its first-ever all-women force-level expedition to Mt. Nun (7,135 m) in the Nun-Kun massif, Kargil. This historic feat marks a pathbreaking milestone in ITBP’s tradition of excellence in high-altitude operations. Flagged off on 3 July 2025 from ITBP Headquarters, New Delhi, by Rahul Rasgotra, IPS, DG ITBP, the team underwent nearly one month of intensive pre-climb training at Leh for acclimatization and technical preparedness before embarking on the ascent. On 13 August 2025 at 09:25 AM, the first rope team, comprising 7 climbers and 3 technical members, successfully summited Mt. Nun after starting from the summit camp late on 12 August. The second rope team of 7 climbers and 2 technical members reached the summit at 08:50 AM on 14 August 2025, completing the climb in a meticulously planned two-day summit push. Known as the highest peak in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, Mt. Nun is a formidable high-altitude climb, characterized by steep mixed ice–rock terrain, knife-edge ridges, crevasse-laden glaciers, vertical ice walls, and unpredictable weather. It is recognized as a preparatory peak for 8,000-meter expeditions, demanding exceptional endurance, technical skill, and strategic planning. This is Mt. Koubru, the Meiteis' one of the most sacred mountains. Lord Koubru is synonymous with Meiteis as it is intertwined with the history of Meiteis, ever since the origin of Meiteis. Till very recently, Koubru was covered with thick forests, rich in flora and fauna. Atop the mountain, there's a lake which the Meiteis consider sacred, and the shrine of Lord Koubru. Every year in April, Meiteis go there for worship. History has it that Meiteis originated at the foothills of Mt Koubru. Imphal valley was once inundated with water from the Loktak Lake. Meitei kings used to build single-wood boats made from the big trees of Mt. Koubru to explore Imphal valley. They eventually settled in Imphal once the water dried up. The #Kukis started inhabiting the foothills of Mt. Koubru around 1990's. For the last 3-4 years, Meitei pilgrims have been intimidated and threatened regularly. The mountain has been scalped clean. 300+ year old trees are no longer to be seen, the lake has dried up.
