The Indian pilots never saw it coming, Pakistan was able to detect, guide and hit Indian fighters with impunity, through datalinks between AWACS and PL-15 missiles. The AWACS lower frequency radar didn't trigger the radar warning receiver on indian fighters, and was downed before they knew what happened.
