In 2014, India’s National Highways spanned just over 90,000 km. Today, under Nitin Gadkari’s leadership, they stretch over 1,46,000 km a 60% expansion driven by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in just over 10 years. From the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway to the Eastern Peripheral, from Lucknow–Kanpur to the Nagpur–Hyderabad corridor, India now builds roads at 35–40 km a day. Now it has a home-grown alternative that is proving just as strong, and in some cases stronger. Indian scientists have developed bio-bitumen, known as Krishi Bind, made from agricultural waste like rice straw. When blended with conventional bitumen, it has matched and, in laboratory tests, even exceeded the strength and durability of regular road binders. Bio-bitumen is produced through pyrolysis, a clean process that converts crop residue into bio-oil without burning or smoke. This material is then blended into road surfaces that are already being laid on pilot stretches of national highways. India is the first country to produce bio-bitumen commercially for roads. Early field performance shows good resistance to heat, moisture and wear, while long-term monitoring continues. Footage from the S V Road Walk on Monday, Goregaon West. The pedestrian crossing point visible is not even as wide as the painted zebra crossing. And everyday people go through this situation in the morning and the evening rush hour. We have been highlighting how the craze to make roads difficult to cross has taken over the city in the past decade. This is clearly a vehice centric approach to move the most amount of vehicles over actually moving the most number of people. Points to note 1) Roads like S V Road are not highways. These are urban roads with dense habitation on both sides creating the need for frequent crossing. 2) Crossing the road is a fundamental need as a pedestrian with FSI being doled out on tap and density increasing 3) Wider crossings allow for simultaneous crossing in both directions and reduces bunching of pedestrians and dwell time at the narrow and dangerous median refuge. 4) There have to be frequent wide crossings if not keep the dividers as they once were.
