The same type of reaction that powers the Sun and has cost governments billions to study because it is extremely hard to pull off. And he is 12. He reportedly spent years learning the physics before putting the machine together, using a vacuum chamber and high voltage equipment to make it work. Only a small number of amateur builders worldwide have ever achieved fusion. Most of them are adult engineers.

We're going deeper... Bill Gates & Jeff Bezos have invested in Commonwealth Fusion Systems and General Fusion, which use a Deuterium and Tritium fuel mix. While this fuel source emits more radiation than other fusion technologies, the fuel is widely available including Tritium from seawater. Peter Thiel & Sam Altman have both invested in the private nuclear fusion company Helion Energy. While helium is pretty abundant, the fuel source Helium-3 is not. It is extremely rare on Earth, with only a few small deposits.
