For decades India imported chips. Now the real race is whether it can become a place where the world comes to build them.

What will matter is turning those fab plans into jobs that actually reach tier‑2 towns, not just headline numbers. Supply‑chain depth, skilled training and affordable power will decide if the hype becomes everyday reality.

While the government claims rapid growth in the semiconductor sector, the ground reality still shows heavy dependence on imports, limited fabrication infrastructure, and slow project execution. Announcements alone cannot substitute for real industrial capacity and job creation. Big claims about a booming semiconductor industry don’t match reality. India still lacks large-scale chip manufacturing, and most projects remain on paper while unemployment among youth continues to be a major concern. The semiconductor push is a positive step, but calling the industry ‘thriving’ is premature. India still faces challenges in technology, investment execution, and skilled workforce development that need urgent attention.” Claims of a ‘thriving’ semiconductor industry sound good, but without real fabrication plants and large-scale jobs, it’s more vision than reality.

Serious scaling here. Mission 2.0 sounds ambitious, but the competition is brutal.

From assembling chips to designing them. From importing to exporting. India's semiconductor story is being rewritten in real time and ISM 2.0 is the next chapter. Bharat is serious about this. 🇮🇳

Absolutely right, PM Modi! India's semiconductor industry is indeed thriving — from pilot plants of CG Power & Kaynes already running to four major units (including Tata & Micron) set to start commercial production in 2026. The Semiconductor Mission has unlocked billions in investment and is turning 'Chip shortage' into 'Chip self-reliance'. Proud to see Made-in-India chips powering the future!

India is clearly pushing hard to build a strong semiconductor ecosystem at the state level, which can create skilled jobs and strengthen local manufacturing capacity. With initiatives like Semiconductor Mission 2.0, the focus seems to be on scaling up infrastructure, attracting investment, and developing talent—key steps needed to compete globally in such a complex and strategic industry.

4 of 6 AI-Robotics for India manufacturing Productivity: Modest gains; robotics installations at record 9,100 in 2024 but adoption still early-stage. Without accelerated AI-robotics, baseline trajectory (8% GVA, 10% exports,5% productivity,2% employment growth) yields steady

Exactly! India’s semiconductor push isn’t just about building chips—it’s about building careers, innovation, and a tech ecosystem for the next generation. A few key aspects: 1.Pan-India growth States like Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana are emerging as semiconductor hubs, each contributing to design, manufacturing, and testing. This spreads opportunities across the country, not just concentrated in a few cities. 2.Youth and skill development With semiconductor plants, OSAT facilities, and R&D centers coming up, there’s a massive demand for engineers, technicians, and researchers. This is creating high-value jobs and giving Indian youth a chance to participate in cutting-edge tech sectors. 3.Semiconductor Mission 2.0 Building on the success of Mission 1.0, this next phase is aimed at scaling production, boosting domestic capabilities, and fostering innovation. It signals India’s intent to move up the semiconductor value chain, from assembly to advanced chip design and fabrication. competitiveness By strengthening its semiconductor ecosystem, India positions itself as a reliable partner for global tech companies, while nurturing homegrown innovation in AI, IoT, automotive electronics, and more.

#WATCH | Delhi | On Semiconductor Sector Skilling, National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology Director General, Madan Mohan Tripathi says, "The Cabinet recently approved ISM 2.0, involving an outlay of approximately Rs 1.28 lakh crore. Skill development is a crucial component of this initiative. The government is continuously taking new steps to boost the semiconductor ecosystem in India—moving from ISM 1.0 to ISM 2.0—and has approved numerous manufacturing plants and projects... Under the leadership of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, NIELIT is actively engaged in digital skill development. Specifically for the semiconductor sector, we are establishing two Centres of Excellence to provide training in OSAT and ATMP processes—in Ahmedabad and Guwahati. We have signed MoUs with Tata Electronics for the Guwahati facility and with Infineon for the Ahmedabad facility. We are also collaborating with other manufacturing plants... to prepare the workforce required for their operations... Through NIELIT’s 'Deemed-to-be-University' status, we are launching various BTech, MTech, and diploma programs focused on semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing... thereby creating a specialised workforce... We also have an agreement with Semiconductor Complex Limited (SCL) in Mohali, which enables the actual manufacturing of these products. In this way, we cover the entire skilling spectrum in the semiconductor domain, providing training that goes beyond academics to empower students to create real-world products. Beyond semiconductors, significant work is also underway in fields like Artificial Intelligence. Under the 'India AI Mission,' 28 AI labs have been set up across India—particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. We are running approximately 42 programs through which we have already trained 20,000 individuals, resulting in the development of various grassroots-level products..."

For decades, India had the talent but lacked the ecosystem and policy push to manufacture semiconductors at scale. Then the game changed. ⬇️ • 2007–13: Semiconductor plans stalled amid delays, red tape and failed proposals under the UPA. • 2021: India Semiconductor Mission launched with a ₹76,000 crore commitment. • 2025–26: Micron’s Gujarat facility began production, marking a major milestone for chip manufacturing in India. • ₹1.66 lakh crore: Investment across 10 projects in six states. • Semicon 2.0: ₹1.27 lakh crore to strengthen the wider ecosystem, from equipment and materials to chemicals, gases and chip design. • By 2030: A $100 billion semiconductor market, with India aiming to meet 75% of its domestic chip demand through local production. From missed opportunities to building an entire ecosystem from the ground up, India is determined not to miss the semiconductor revolution again.
