India’s transgender community may be facing its most significant challenge since its legal recognition as the ‘third gender’. The proposed amendments to the Transgender Persons Act were passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. They are set to be taken up next in the Rajya Sabha.

The Bill deletes the right to self-determination. 👉 Many transgender persons have already spoken about the immense barriers they face in securing a simple ID card. By adding more bureaucratic hurdles, we are not protecting them; we are exhausting them into invisibility. 👉 The Bill must be referred to the Standing Committee for detailed and inclusive consultation with the transgender community and all stakeholders. The first electoral reform should be to include the LoP Rajya Sabha and the CJI in the selection committee for appointing the CEC. The selection committee should consist of: • The Prime Minister • The LoP Lok Sabha • The LoP Rajya Sabha • Union Cabinet Minister • The Chief Justice of India 2 people from the government, 2 from the opposition & 1 neutral Then only there will be no doubt in people’s minds about the Election Commission and the CEC. —Manish Tewari
