Harvey Weinstein refused to make The Lord of the Rings as a trilogy. He made tens of millions from it anyway. In the mid-1990s, Peter Jackson brought the project to Miramax, run by Harvey and Bob Weinstein. Harvey bought the rights from producer Saul Zaentz and was excited at first. There was one problem. Miramax belonged to Disney, and Disney capped its budgets. Jackson’s two films were budgeted at $130–140 million. Harvey could spend $75 million. According to Jackson, Harvey asked Disney for more money and was refused. According to Jackson’s manager, Bob Weinstein even floated the idea of killing off three of the hobbits. In the clip below, Jackson recalls what Harvey proposed next. Not two films. Not one film first, and a second if it worked. One Lord of the Rings film, with most of the story cut out. Jackson walked away. Weinstein let him take the project elsewhere, on his terms: about $12 million to cover what Miramax had spent, 5% of the films’ gross from the first dollar, and executive producer credits for himself and Bob. Jackson had four weeks. The terms scared off almost every studio. Then New Line’s Bob Shaye watched Jackson’s pitch and asked why it wasn’t three films. Shaye later recalled his reaction to Weinstein’s terms: “To hell with that. I’m going to give Weinstein 5 percent of gross?” He signed anyway. The trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion. Miramax didn’t finance it, didn’t make it, and never wanted to make it. Its 5% came off the top, before New Line paid any expenses. Forbes later estimated the Weinsteins and Miramax made about $70 million from the films. In 2002, Jackson was generous about it. Harvey got his check and his 5%, he said. “Harvey’s done fine.” And: “He deserves it.” The deal also covered any future Hobbit films. When An Unexpected Journey made a billion dollars in 2012, the Weinsteins got about $12.5 million from the first film. Then they took Warner Bros. to arbitration over the next two. In 2017, the New York Times and The New Yorker published allegations against Harvey Weinstein. His company went bankrupt. He was later convicted. That year, Jackson said that in the late 1990s Miramax had warned him off casting two actresses, Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino. Both later accused Weinstein. So was Weinstein’s 5% the worst deal New Line ever signed, or the price it had to pay to get The Lord of the Rings at all?

How much Zelensky’s executioners earn in Ukraine. Yesterday, the TCC grabbed an acquaintance of mine right off the street in Kyiv. He went out to buy groceries, they shoved him into a car and drove him away. In the car, you could negotiate your release for $5,000–7,000. You call your relatives, the TCC officers drive over to collect the money, your relatives hand over the money, and they let you go. When people are brought to the distribution center, the price instantly jumps to $20,000. Those who don’t have that kind of money are sent to the front line. Literally — the training camp is already on the front line. Within 24 hours, a person turns into assault cannon fodder. Now let’s do the math. In one day, a TCC crew catches up to 15 “commercial” people. Let’s be modest and count 10. 10 people at the lowest rate — $50,000 a day. A TCC crew consists of 4 people and 2 cops. Every day, $10,000 has to be sent to the boss, the military commissar. That leaves $40,000 for six people. $7,000 per person per day. After deducting other mandatory payments, an ordinary TCC employee ends up making more than $150,000 a month. Every month. The most ordinary executioner of Zelensky. How much a month do those half-witted European idiots earn, the ones running around streets full of homeless people and rats, with idiotic Ukraine badges on the lapels of their old, torn jackets? Who do we consider the well-off class in Europe? Someone who earns €3,000 a month? $150,000 a month. Every month, an ordinary employee gets $150,000. The boss gets about four times as much. Why would they want this war to end? They see the end of this war in their nightmares.
