Ramazan – Day 6 🤍 Something has changed in the house. The same children who once counted every minute to iftaari… “Ammi, how much longer?” “Ammi, I’m hungry…” “Can I just drink water?” Are now quiet. Steady. Composed. Filza is 11. Ozil is 9. This is their third Ramazan. I still remember their first Roza… one tiny fast that felt like climbing a mountain. So many questions. So much restlessness. So much drama before Maghrib. And today? They fast like pros. Less irritation. More sabr. Less complaining. More understanding. Less “I want.” More “It’s okay.” In this fast-paced digital world, where everything is instant, where patience is rare, where even adults struggle with discipline.. This is the condition of areas in London where upper caste Indians live, like Southall and Wembley. Southall is often called “Little India,” where a large part of the population is Indian. But one question remains: where is the civic sense? Litter and overflowing bins are often seen, taking away from the beauty of these places. Preserving culture is not just about identity and celebration, it also means keeping surroundings clean. Upper castes tend to limit the idea of cleanliness to their private spaces. Once the home is clean, the responsibility is considered fulfilled. What exists outside that boundary is treated as someone else’s concern. This mindset is not isolated. It is shaped by a long-standing social structure where sanitation work has been historically assigned to lower castes. Over time, this division has normalized indifference towards public spaces. As a result, there can be an implicit assumption that such responsibilities will always be handled by others, even in environments where that system does not exist. However, this expectation does not hold in places like London, where public cleanliness operates on shared responsibility rather than caste-based roles. At its core, this is less about geography and more about unlearning deeply embedded social conditioning.

Vietnam gives India a run for its money when it comes to building public places with near same per capita income. Sorry fellows. What is true is true. And what India lacks more than money is an urge to be a tidy place. Indians have gotten used to living in filth. Indian leadership don’t plan any public places - where people can hang out and enjoy. What is equivalent of Central Park/Hyde Park for Mumbai? What is equivalent of Hollywood hills? Mumbai has great surrounding and potential, but not accessible. Any great public park was either built by British or Mughals (with few exceptions). My usual rant: IAS & Judiciary has failed India. The service needs to be diluted with power distributed to 10 times more people (doesn’t India need jobs anyway?). The ratio of IAS, judges to population need to be brought to at least UK levels. We have many great people no point letting power in hands on a few thousand. “Vishwaguru”, “great culture” - how about learning basic civic sense first and being the worthy descendants of the great old civilization? (View from my hotel, will post more in coming days of “normal places’ that will give any Indian city run for its money). Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi are incredible at this income level. They also had 2 decades of war!
