On a fifties era chassis design. Rumsfeld blocked the Army's last attempt to replace it more than twenty years ago. That is insane.

This is far from insane. It's kinda pathetic. This is the US army still playing catchup to other western alligned countries. The US bet big on rocket artillery in the 80s and ever since not quite put the effort required into SPGs to get anything actually good.

The A7 variant has been in service since 2015, so not so new. The US is still seeking a replacement; foreign users are adopting the PzH 2000, while the British picked the AS-90.
