Insane situation just unfolded in Syria. This man was found disoriented in a local village, released from one of the prisons. Immediately, people thought he was missing US journalist Austin Tice — turns out he was an American kidnapped in Syria that we didn't even know about.

New Syrian gov. released Timmerman and is continuing to search for Austin Tice. State Department has said that they've had direct communication with HTS re: finding Tice.

Wait, if he was in Budapest does that mean that theirs a good chance he went there to join one of those foreign fighter networks? I swear I remember Budapest being an ISIS recruiting hub/checkpoint years ago

Timmerman told Elizabeth Palmer that he had been trying to make his own way out of the country after walking out of the prison where he'd been held for more than half of a year. He said he "had a few moments of fear" and hadn't processed that he was free.
