those straps are the least of your problems in this build

You have build 200 stairs wrong

Thank god you didn’t build anything for me, family, or friends.

Every hole in those straps needs a nail manufacturer spec, no shortcuts on stairs. Inspector did the job right. Fill 'em all next time.

Ummmmm seriously 🤔?the stringer should butt up against the header. And rest into a hanging bucket..

The size of that knot in the stringer is also questionable

200 bad decks. That hole is there for a reason lol

I would hypothesize that adding nails there is bound to split the wood and possibly detract from the overall joint strength. I've had my fair share of run-ins with inspectors that only count fasteners.

4 Problems here: No nails in some holes. Knot and dark striations compromise integrity. Used hacksaw to cut wood? Pakistani account.

Will it work, yeah. Will it pass, no. The difference is liability, the manufacturer states every hole gets filled. If he passes a build with one missing, then the inspector assumes liability.

If an inspector says it needs a nail to pass his inspection… put a fucking nail there and quit your bitching.

as a deck builder of over 30 yrs, thats a def shit job and deserved to fail. that is not how steps are constructed

Yeah not the right strap, Needs a Ledger and a hanger

You know full well all nail holes in a hanger, need a nail to pass.

When there is disagreement, pull the code, look at the manufacturer’s instructions. If plans were drawn and sealed by a licensed engineer there should be details showing installation as well. If all requirements are followed then inspection should pass.

Obviously you didn't use every hole as specified by manufacturer and if you weren't such an ass, the inspector would have said put a nail in it, send me a picture, and ill pass it. Just like every inspector I've dealt with. Respect goes a long way.

I'd just nail a 2x8 to the beam over the straps as a hanger. That should satisfy the inspector.

Not the way I'd do it.

Those stringers could almost be upside down. Top of the stringer should be resting on the header or platform. Looking at how the top was cut it should have framed directly into the header with a bucket at a minimum

Inspector has no engineering skills apparently, bc those straps aren't going to break, or move as they are.

Put a nail in it then

Just put the nail in. Stop complaining

Surprised you haven't killed someone yet.

Shitty detail to start with.

Stringer should be resting on top of solid framework, you are relying on these straps to hold the weight of the stairs with nails instead of screws which will waggle loose with movement.

No... because you are hanging weight carrying pieces from the support vs resting them on them. You're whole config is super stupid.

He's built so many then why is he confused? The stringers are cut wrong.

I don’t build decks and am not an engineer, but isn’t all the weight of those steps resist on those straps? Shouldn’t there be a support under those stringers that transfers the weight into 4x4 or 6x6 columns? This just looks way too shady for my untrained eye.

It's called redundancy. Don't cheap out on nails. It also triggers OCD. Also the wood looks split. I'm siding with the inspector.

Taking shortcuts on the safety specs is fine with this builder. I wouldn’t employ you with an “I don’t give a fuck” attitude. Yes, it’s only one nail, so why didn’t you do it? It’s 30 seconds of work.

And that nail has a chance of splitting the wood

Just put the fucking nail in there buddy

How you do anything, is how you do everything.

Its 2026. At this point everyone knows that things attached to your house has to be built by the book. Hes acting like they JUST made these rules.

why hole if no nail
