The difference between being a craftsman and a "Git-ER-Done" slap-bang modern worker.

My grandfather raised a 7 kids doing this as his career. Grandma stayed at home. He could raise a sheet to the ceiling with 1 hand and nail with the other.

That’s Rock Lathe, it replaced wood lathe as a base for plaster. Where I lived they started using the drywall in the early 60’s

I don't know if it was true of all drywall but, I've seen where the nails work themselves out and ruin the appearance of the wall. This is why they use screws today.

My dad did a lot of this as a union carpenter. He was in demand for a lot of big projects because he always got the job done ahead of schedule with no remediation needed afterwards.

I was taught to install drywall like this in 1975 just prior to Electric drills. Handheld electric tools changed a lot of building practices. Made it easier for everyone to be able to do it. Lost a lot of the quality the craftsman perfected over the years.

I remodel bathrooms and I have torn this out during demos before. It’s a little difficult but nothing like wood lathe with plaster. I like the newer methods much more.

So that's how my grandparents had those rounded corner archways in their house! Sweet! Now I know. =)

It shows properly built timber frame not these simple systems buikt today , cause of artisans lack of skills. Old growth timber was straighter . Those dry wall sheets were stronger and didnt rely on the paper for stability. Also the nails were better quakuty

I think that's gypsum.lath, not drywall. They'd plaster over that instead of using wood lath.

The way we do it today is better, However, give this tradesman a lot of respect for his skill with that Hart “sheetrocker” hammer.

I have this size wallboard in my second floor. I have a 1933 bungalow. I think it was installed later.

My home was built in the 60's. I had a addition added in 2019. The addition is already having issues. The main home built in 60's still solid as rock. Wall are much harder and sturdy. It hurts to knock on walls. I can punch a hole through my addition. Crazy.

I worked a summer hanging drywall back in the early '70's, all old school. I had the belt nail pouch, drywall hammer, T-square, 1" wide tape measure, utility knife, and a toe jack, for lifting the bottom boards to flush against the one above it. We were building out new apartments, 100's per development, and we got paid by the board, with a bonus for finishing the unit. Two of us could knock out a unit a day easily, floor to ceiling.
