Instead of slashing welfare and disability benefits — forcing more disabled people and children into poverty — the government could introduce a 2% tax on assets over £10 million. It would raise £24 billion — five times the savings from these cuts. This is austerity 2.0.

The Government should not be balancing the books on the backs of the poor and disabled. On @lbc I called for a wealth tax instead. A wealth tax of just 2% on assets over £10 million would raise £24 BILLION per year. Let's tax extreme wealth, not punish the poorest.

Ahead of today’s Budget, I presented a petition in Parliament calling for wealth taxes signed by over 50,000 people. A Wealth Tax of just 2% on assets over £10 million would raise £24 BILLION per year. That's what we need - not more cuts and austerity.

Our tax system is rigged, people with money pay half the rate of tax of people with jobs. A wealth tax would be a start and it's worth pointing out, it would only affect 20,000 people out of 60 million, and they (we) would only pay 2% on anything over 10 million pounds. It would generate £24 billion a year - which could fund so many things we badly need.

Cutting benefits does not create jobs - it creates poverty. The Labour Party was built to stand with working class people, that has always included the unemployed and disabled. There is no need for a penny in cuts - it's time for a wealth tax, not more austerity!
