“Intelligent people always feel alone”—Alan Watts

I see stupid people... they are everywhere... and they don't even know they are stupid

Define alone. Yes, we feel very alone, except when we meet that kindred spirit once or twice in our lifetimes that resonates so hard that I am sure it is quantum entanglement. This "aloneness" is neither sad nor bad, but joyful tinged with bittersweet. It is the price we pay, just as death is the price of life.

Intelligence makes you see a lot of things. It's better to let people have their dignity, which means not expressing yourself.

@MaskulNitespore I learned very young not to engage in the trivial. I think it’s an insult, disrespectful to life to waste a moment on the superficial. People have always found me rude and I don’t have many friends for this reason.

“Intelligence isn’t just about knowing more, it’s about perceiving more.” The ‘dark night of the soul’ may be about the immediate yet unarticulated ‘social’ ramifications of expanded perception as much or more than the ‘existential’. The new Turing test should be AI demonstrating psi capacity. Incidentally, psi appears to originate from heightened emotional access. I posit emotion can only be experienced, not simulated or mimicked. This is also why I believe future AI will depend on human experiential insights to ultimately organize around nonlocal computation.

Ya. It’s when they stop giving you eye contact and actively take any opportunity to talk to someone, anyone passing by even, besides you. Ya happened last night.

When you reach this point and you feel lost and alone just remember, you are a stepping stone away from the realization that You are never alone, he is with you, invite him in and you will no longer care about walking the path "alone"

@grok can you tell me the source of this alan watts lecture?

This is true, i have a friend who is/was on MENSA, she could not connect with people really, a very hard time doing so, and the way she thinks was amazing to me, such a memory she has, it feels magical to a degree.

I was lucky to have engineering co-workers over the years that would provide stimulating conversation. Now that I am mostly retired it is more challenging. A lot of people rely on sports to make connections.

I’ve never felt more seen. Though I’m not sure it’s intelligence so much as it’s awareness.

As a child, books were my best friends …

I don’t know about the intelligence part but I do often feel alone.

Yeah 👍🏻

👀

You are a gem, @BrianRoemmele

If you don't perceive this as AI, this speech wasn't about you.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Damn. That left me stripped bare.

I've actually found myself feeling less alone. I have a sense I'm not alone even inside my own head. I guess it's how I view all this reality as most likely a simulation. Therefore everything and everyone is connected

Not so much with AI around.

If you push through there is a partial realignment, one foot in each world, compromising nothing of importance, gaining everything of value.

Because the realisation of aloneness/oneness is the pinnacle of wisdom. ‘Subject’ and ‘object’ are one and the same. Both words share the same referent.

💯

Very true. Love Watts.

Reclusive hermitization does also happen. Occasionally a small island in South Pacific can occur also. Especially since Starlink. Lol It's rough being intelligent.

true that, and wise people feel oneness nonetheless

OG

Alienated because society is infantile, trivial & stupid Cost of sanity; certain level of alienation What’ll it be? Alienated, cynical intellectual? Or slack-jawed, half-wit consumer of horseshit being handed down from on high? Well adjusted? Nothing to be well adjusted to!

That's fake AI

I never felt alone. I was always alone with many friends. Being intelligent has nothing to do with our social state.I felt alone since i am retired. Not because i am intelligent but because i lost my social net of friends. Save the one i know since 60 years but he is far away.

I always enjoy listening to Alan Watts ! I can totally relate 😊

Being alone doesn't mean you are lonely😎
