@theodorus5 116 concepts in your atlas. "Interface" shows up under Platonic space, observers and evolution, never under selves and collective minds. Is cognitive glue an interface too? I keep wondering if a self starts where two interfaces tune to each other rather than to the space.

Profilbild von Michael Levin
Michael Levinvor 1 Tag

that is a great question and I've been thinking about it. Can glues be interfaces themselves. I'm guessing yes but I don't have a worked out model yet. Working on some sort of pointer arithmetic for combining interfaces in collective intelligences, and then the pointer addition algorithm becomes itself an interface. Stay tuned.

Guys, can we all pick one area to specialize in? (I've picked mine!). Then we can all collaborate and have someone to help answer questions / improve understanding, develop projects etc. Who else has picked bioelectric control? We should get together and discuss ideas

Incredible work! It seems like "Bodies and regenerative medicine" have become a small fraction of your focus. Do you not think it is the most impactful and practical topic that helps humanity most directly? Or do you personally find the other topics more interesting?

Profilbild von Michael Levin
Michael Levinvor 1 Tag

No, about 80% of my group is wetlab biologists and all of them are working full steam on birth defects, cancer, regeneration and aging. It's just that there are fewer wild concepts there that need mapping in this way. I could add plenty of detail, maybe I will add some more. This stuff are just things that are harder for people to integrate so I made the mindmap, but I still eat, sleep, and drink bioelectrics of regeneration as the practical outputs. The regenerative medicine side is crucial because without those kinds of applications, all the deep ideas are for naught. I honestly don't know what will, in the end, do the most good - a better understanding of what we are and can be, vs. medical treatments to reduce suffering. But I'm trying to contribute something to both ends.

@ShpanMan Is it possible that the extracellular matrix/hydration acts as a structural memory for the bioelectric code. Could scarring/dehydration cause structural "fuzziness," which could break the feedback loop and cause cells to lose target morphology (like in fibrosis)? Is this studied?

Profilbild von Michael Levin
Michael Levinvor 1 Tag

@ShpanMan It's certainly possible that it contributes. It has not been studied much, to my knowledge.

In Self-Improvising Memory, you argue that memory preserves salience rather than fidelity. If a false reconstruction still helps a system function and shapes future decisions, what distinguishes useful reinterpretation from an error that becomes self-reinforcing?

Profilbild von Michael Levin
Michael Levinvor 1 Tag

Nothing really, and one can say that all of our stories of the past are "errors" in so many (adaptive) ways. of course there can be forces to push toward minimizing disagreement with others (inter-observer truths) but this only works at the low level. Two people are watching a tree being cut down. Do they both see a metal saw moving back and forth? yes. But after that, they disagree. Overall, one sees progress and a furniture factory, the other says no, he saw environmental destruction. Which one is in error? Perspectives are self-reinforcing and errors look different at different scales.

Profilbild von Gina Singer
Gina Singervor 1 Tag

That makes sense for interpretation. But what if the reconstruction rewrites the low-level account, like one observer later remembering they were the one holding the saw? Would that still fall under the inter-observer truths you mentioned, or does even that blur?

Profilbild von Michael Levin
Michael Levinvor 1 Tag

I think it's a continuum. "holding" becomes questionable for example when one person felt coerced to hold the saw etc. - at gunpoint, was I really holding the saw? Kind of, but kind of you were. I think it's easier to have fixed facts at lowest level and immediately after that, the importance of interpretation starts to grow.

Profilbild von Gina Singer
Gina Singervor 23 Stunden

Thank you, the continuum and gunpoint example help. Auditing a long-term AI collaboration, I found the AI carrying its own interpretations forward as facts, even when the record didn't support them. What interests me is when a useful reconstruction starts to become its own evidence.

Michael, I’d love to see you explore “Memories as agents” and “Recognizing unfamiliar minds” in greater depth. These two topics are especially intriguing to me. 🧠 1) I’m not sure in what sense you approach memories as agents, but could this perspective help us work with our own memories differently, or use them more constructively? 2) And when it comes to recognizing unfamiliar minds, are there principles or accessible methods that ordinary people could use to explore this without laboratory equipment? What could we look for through observation and interaction, and how could we distinguish actual agency from our tendency to project it?

Great map, Michael. One node we'd love to see on it is what it costs to keep a pattern. Your cells hold bioelectric memories without synapses. Has anyone priced that hold, energy per bit stored in a voltage pattern, the way Laughlin priced a fly synapse at about 10,000 to 60,000 ATP per bit?
