Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee's death row, received two doses of a lethal drug in a Nashville execution chamber Wednesday night. But she didn't die. Now, she is alive in a hospital and receiving "lifesaving medical care," according to her attorney. The extent of Pike's injuries after the failed execution was unclear. Although her survival was "unparalleled," as one expert said, it was the latest example of a botched execution attempt involving lethal injections in Tennessee and elsewhere around the United States. @skylerhenry reports.

The Governor of Tennessee has ordered all state executions to be suspended and launched an independent review after an inmate survived attempts to execute her. Christa Pike's execution was halted and she was taken to hospital when she was still showing signs of life after receiving two lethal injections. Governor Bill Lee said he was "highly disappointed". 50-year-old Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 aged 18 for murdering her 19-year-old schoolmate Colleen Slemmer. Including Pike, there are 40 people currently on death row in the state of Tennessee. It is the second failed attempt to execute someone in the U.S. state this year, after prison officials failed to find a suitable vein for the lethal injection of inmate Tony Carruthers, who was also convicted of murder. Warning: this video contains content some viewers may find distressing. #Channel4News #News #ChristaPike #Tennessee #America #Prison

Christa Pike was supposed to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than 200 years. Instead, something happened that has put her case back at the center of the news. On Wednesday, Tennessee attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection for the 1995 murder of 19 year old Colleen Slemmer. But according to witnesses, officials administered two doses of the lethal drug and still could not complete the execution. Pike remained alive and was taken from the prison by ambulance. The attempt came hours after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for Tennessee to proceed, overturning a last minute stay. Now the biggest question is what happens next after an execution that never actually happened. Was this a medical failure, or could it trigger another legal battle?
