Mr. Maiyya invented Rava idly not during WWII but during the time of emergency in India, when the cost of rice shot up and the restaurant could not keep up to the cost of providing quality idlies. The story how Rava idly was born is put up in MTR restaurant in Bangalore.

The Kannad dish upma has an interesting history. It was invented by the sage and grammarian Panini himself, along with the panini sandwich that is popular in Italy. The Sanskrit word "upma" means "simile" and this dish was made as a simile of life. Soft, nutty, salty, spicy.

Upma has gone beyond Rava. Arisi Upma in Tamil (rice Upma), Dhalia Upma (wheat rava), semia upma (Vermicelli including whole wheat), Avul Upma (Poha), Pori Upma (puffed rice), Idli Upma (leftover Idlis), Bread Upma. Karnataka Rava Kesari (halva).
