Afshin Rattansi: ‘Because of local currency settlement, I don't think Trump likes that either, with rupees and dirhams being used. The fact is, they allow and disallow by not only outright saying you can't trade with Russia, India, stop importing Russian energy, they can also create a situation where there's a propaganda model to destroy the reputation of India all around the world. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom has been targeting India as a Country of Particular Concern, so they're now threatening sanctions, asset freezes, halting of arms sales to India, and they want Rubio, presumably the State Department, to have in-country assessments of India. So they can not only say they'll put sanctions on for importing Russian energy, they can destroy the reputation of India. Peter Navarro says he isn’t interested in negotiations despite overtures by export-based economies (e.g. Vietnam, Cambodia, China and India) and that the US is all in on hurting their economies until they buy as many products as they sell, even if they reduce their tariffs to 0%. “They’re coming now and saying we want to talk, we’ll lower our tariffs to zero. That’s not the problem. Vietnam is a great example, Laura. They sell us $15 for every one we sell them. Zero tariffs would get us no reduction in the $123 billion deficit we have.”
