Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak has announced plans to introduce a dedicated levy on fuel purchases to retool and enhance the operational capacity of the Ghana National Fire Service #JoyNews

In 2022, Ghana’s total petroleum consumption was approximately 4,318 kilotonnes of oil equivalent (ktoe), averaging about 359.8 ktoe per month. Gasoline and gasoil were the primary fuels consumed, accounting for 39.4% and 46.1% of the total consumption, respectively. This equates to monthly averages of approximately 141.8 ktoe for gasoline and 165.9 ktoe for gasoil.  To convert these figures into liters, we can use the approximate energy content of these fuels: •Gasoline: 1 tonne ≈ 1,340 liters •Gasoil (Diesel): 1 tonne ≈ 1,190 liters Applying these conversion factors: •Gasoline: 141,800 tonnes/month × 1,340 liters/tonne ≈ 190.0 million liters/month •Gasoil: 165,900 tonnes/month × 1,190 liters/tonne ≈ 197.4 million liters/month Therefore, the combined average monthly consumption of gasoline and gasoil in Ghana during 2022 was approximately 387.4 million liters.  It’s important to note that these figures represent the total consumption of these fuels nationwide and do not account for other petroleum products such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), kerosene, or aviation fuel. Additionally, consumption patterns can vary due to factors like economic activity, fuel prices, and policy changes. If these figures are right and we levy each liter 10 pesewas, we can make 30,000000 cedis each month and 360,000000 annually. This should be enough to empower our fire service. This is a laudable idea, provided the funds would be used judiciously for its intended purpose
