This is the biggest piece of the puzzle. This is how to understand people 90% of the way. You just... notice what they do, and get out of the way, and watch them do it. And if they need sticks, you give them sticks. And if you don't like what they do, you have to get away from them. You cannot train dam-building into them or out of them any more than you can with a beaver. A beaver wants to build a dam because it is a beaver. Whatever you see people build, that's what they wanted to build from the sticks they got in the river they were in. Stop pretending you can change it.

Krishna on how Anthropic thinks about the platform vs. application layer, and when they decide to build their own products like Claude Code. It’s the question every investor and founder is thinking about: “Most of what we're building is platform. There's so many examples of where a platform can accrue a lot of value, but the customers who are building on that platform actually accrue even more value. We will build our own applications on that same platform where a couple of things are true. Number one, if we feel like we have a vision into where the models are going and we can demonstrate that and create customer value in that, that might be something like Claude Code. The second is thinking about ways to demonstrate value for the ecosystem that others might emulate. If you think about Claude for financial services or Claude for life sciences, these are ways in which we've composed the platform. We're building on the same platform as our customers. That creates a level playing field. We also think that there's so much value that's going to accrue in these areas that our customers can win and we can win as well. So I think of our strategy as mostly horizontal. A lot of the value is going to accrue to the customers that are building on top of it. Our goal is build the best models and then build the products and tools and services that allow that intelligence to proliferate within customers."

The hard part of building is no longer writing code. Code is easy. Nobody wins by writing more code or doing it faster. If you want to win, you need better thinking. There are a ton of startups focusing on using AI to write more code. I think they are missing the plot. We need a mental shift. We need tools that help us think faster, make better decisions, and focus on the right problems. I want you to check out Atoms because they are doing exactly this. They don't focus on the code, but on helping you build the right structure: 1. It starts by deep-researching marketing insights 2. It turns that into an execution plan 3. It builds both frontend and backend 4. It helps with deployment, SEO, growth, and analytics More importantly, it specializes in the core components you need to build and sell software online: • Authentication flows • Stripe payments • Infrastructure Their goal here is not to be another autocomplete tool or a copilot to help you write software. Their goal is to become a "vibe business team" that helps you build a business from the ground up. ✨ To inspire more people to go build something now that we have AI to help us (especially non-tech people, cause I still know so many who are scared of building something): I added a [ BUILD IT ] button to It's like a mini-Lovable/Replit/v0: Any idea you see you like, you can click [ BUILD IT ], and it will use Opus 4.6 to build a landing page for it And then you can download the code it generated It's not a full startup of course, but a nice preview of what it can be, to give you an idea and inspire you to build it out further The code is live streamed also so you can see it being built 😊 Ironically this itself took me 1 hour to build with AI too Completely free and I pay for the tokens (please don't abuse it :D)

How I get shit done, Episode 001 I've set up a playbook called ‘land’, which is triggered automatically when I drag an issue into the merging column in Linear. That reliably runs CI and merges any green PRs. This has allowed me to ship way faster than before. I think the key takeaway here is you can try to build your own code factory and your own agent orchestration layer, but it is a huge amount of work. The truth is there are entire companies with massive funding that are already tackling this and it's just easier to use their platform. I think this is a lot like if you were a carpenter: you could build your own generator, fuel it, wire it up, and then build a plug and then you could plug your saw into it. Or you could just plug your saw into the wall. Because the electricity company has already done all the work in the infrastructure and investment to make that plug work. I think more of us who are building companies should just be plugging into the wall instead of trying to build all this tooling ourselves. As a dev it's so tempting to build your own dev tools but I think a lot of times, even though you can build fast with agents now, it's a complete waste of time. It probably sounds like I'm being paid by Devin or something but I have zero financial interest here. They don't give me credits. I'm not an investor. I'm not being paid. I just think the tooling is really damn good. If you used Devin a long time ago and wrote it off, you really should have another look - for $500/month it's pretty obscene what you can get done.

Dan has a distinctive lens for understanding companies and his view on LLMs as a blend of Netflix and Spotify is particularly interesting: "You are spending a ton of money upfront to train these models. You go sell them at extremely high incremental margins. You don't know what the revenues are going to be, but you want to sell as much as possible so that you can get the cash flow to build the next model. That's very similar to Netflix. When you're an early mover in this fixed asset business, you invest heavily, you get the revenues, and you spread it out over an increasing number of people. The difference is Netflix's content was differentiated. The models are more similar than they are different at any given time. That's where the Spotify analogy comes in. The differentiating factor will not necessarily be that Google gives you a better answer. However, the personalization matters. The first mover advantage is the more that these models know about you, you build up this data history and it becomes very sticky. What makes Spotify have pricing power? It's because they've tailored the service to take a product which is a commodity, and personalize it to the point where you're willing to pay a premium for that commodity."
