Introducing Alterego: the world’s first near-telepathic wearable that enables silent communication at the speed of thought. Alterego makes AI an extension of the human mind. We’ve made several breakthroughs since our work started at MIT. We’re announcing those today.

Here’s how it works: Alterego passively detects the downstream subtle signals your brain sends to your speech system, before words are spoken aloud. It captures only what you intend to say. 🔒It never reads your thoughts. ✅Only picks up what you want to communicate.

This technology is normally called Silent Speech. But we’ve made a breakthrough we call “Silent Sense.” Silent Sense picks up the entire spectrum of speech: - From the mouthing of words - All the way to motionless intent to speak Communicate as loudly or quietly as you want. Alterego will detect it.

A profound application of this technology and a moonshot challenge of our time: giving a voice back to those who have been deprived of it. Our work is deeply collaborative, shaped in partnership with patients, clinicians, and leading experts in the field.

Why now? Current interfaces, keyboards, and touchscreens slow us down. And voice is awkward to use in public. Alterego brings a new era of frictionless communication, where your intent flows directly into action.

We built Alterego to be an extension of the human mind: – Write, create, communicate wherever you are – Help those with specific speech impairments regain their voice – Enable everyone to explore their world effortlessly

This is just the beginning. Imagine a world where AI and computing are woven as an extension of the mind and disappear into the background. That’s the future Alterego is building. 🌍✨

This is cool but a misleading video. A lot of people seem to be confused by this and think it’s mind reading. It’s not. The device requires you to kind of silently whisper the words in your mouth and flap your tongue around.

If the signal can be recorded, the UK will arrest you for thought crimes.

Breakdown of the paper behind it: Title: AlterEgo: A Personalized Wearable Silent Speech Interface The scientists made a special headband with little sensors that touch the skin on the face and neck. These sensors pick up tiny electrical signals from muscles when someone thinks about speaking, even if they don't make a sound. They asked people to silently read numbers (0-9) and math words (like "add" or "multiply") to themselves. They collected a lot of this "silent speech" data, about 31 hours in total. Then, they used a smart computer program called a neural network to learn how to understand these signals and turn them into words. They tested how well the system worked by having 10 people silently say math problems and seeing if the computer got the right answer. The computer would then whisper the answer back to the person using special headphones that send sound through their bones, so only they could hear it. .......

I'm deeply curious about the training methods used to develop this. It feels like something that could only have been created in a post AI era. I wonder if that's true.

Very excited for this I've long been wonder how voice interfaces will work in open-plan offices - non-invasive BCIs are a great solution

I'm assuming this is EMG picking up on mouth/throat signals? There is no way you are decoding speech that accurately with just EEG.
