Michael Seibel on how to create a great startup pitch In the clip below, former Y Combinator CEO Michael Seibel breaks down the two types of pitches every startup founder needs: a 30-second elevator pitch and a two-minute pitch for investors. “A lot of people practice 10-minute, 30-minute, hour-long, pitches. I think that’s all garbage. I think you can get all of your points across in two minutes. And one thing I like to tell founders is that the more you talk, the more you have an opportunity to say something that people don’t like.” 30-Second Elevator Pitch: You should be able to explain to anyone you come across what your company does in 30 seconds. This should be three sentences: 1. What does your company do? Assume the person you’re talking to knows nothing. This should be a 1-sentence explanation that your mom or dad can understand (e.g. “We’re Airbnb and we allow you to rent out the extra room in your house” NOT “We’re Airbnb and we’re a marketplace for space”). 2. How big is the market? Do a couple hours of research so that you can give investors a rough approximation of the size of the market you’re in (e.g. Airbnb might give the size of online hotel booking market) 3. How much traction do you have? Ideally you can say something like: “We launched in January and we’re growing 30% month over month. We have $ X sales and Y users.” If you’re pre-launch, you need to convince investors that you’re moving quickly (e.g. “the team came together in January. By March we launched our beta. By April we launched our product.”). Two-Minute Pitch: This pitch is for people you’re actually trying to convince of something (e.g. investors, potential employees, etc.). You basically want to simply explain what you do and then ask for money. There are 5 key components: 1. Clear 30 second pitch (everything mentioned above) 2. Unique insight—what do the biggest players in your market not understand? This should be 2 sentences. 3. How do you make money? 4. Team. If your team has done something that has made investors money, you should mention that (e.g. “we’re the founders of PayPal”). If you haven’t, don’t go on about the awards you’ve won or PhDs you hold. What investors want to hear is: how many founders? (hopefully 2-4) how many of the founders are technical? (hopefully 50% or more engineers) How long have you known each other? (ideally you’ve known each other either personally or professionally for at least 6 months) Are you all full-time? 5. The Big Ask ($$$). You have to know what you’re talking about when you ask for money. Are you raising on a convertible note or a SAFE? What’s the cap of the SAFE? How much money are you raising? What’s the minimum check size? If you don’t know these things, investors won’t think you’re serious or that you haven’t done your homework.

Why BlackRock CEO Larry Fink calls Ethereum "The Toll Road to Tokenization" "What he meant by that is assets will be tokenized, people will transact, and then each of those transactions will pay a fee to the Ethereum network. Part of that fee will be burned and decrease the supply of ETH. The other part will be paid to stakers. So it's kind of like a toll road for anyone who wants to transact with tokenized assets." "The first example of product/market fit with tokenization was stablecoins. There are a lot of reasons why a tokenized dollar is better than one on fiat rails. But the big things are accessibility -- it gives people around the world who don't have access to the US financial system access to dollars -- and reducing the friction of settling those transactions. If you've had to send a wire or ACH transfer, it takes days. Stablecoins settle instantly, so it's way more efficient. You've even heard Jamie Dimon come around to the advantages of stablecoins." Generally speaking, I think pre-product/market fit metrics are actually relatively unhelpful because probably not that many people are using your product. If it’s 20 users, you can in some sense afford to just look at everything they’re doing to understand what’s working and what isn’t.” Another example of this Patrick gives is embedding a text input on each of their web pages with placeholder text prompting users to give them useful feedback(e.g. “The worst thing about Stripe is…”, “The worst thing about this page is…”, or “I really hate the way Stripe does…”). As Patrick explains: “At that stage, you have to be kind of masochistic. We’d always be waking up to all these emails telling us all the terrible things about Stripe. Having recently closed their $20M Series A, Ostium CoFounder and CEO kaledora joins us to share more on their grand vision in a new The Edge Podcast. What always resonated with me personally is Ostium started with serving us as native onchain investors, who have no interest in off-ramping but would like to get exposure to other non-crypto asset classes onchain 😇 "One problem we saw was in crypto, which was there was no way to use your onchain capital to go and trade things that were not crypto. It felt like everything that had been built to date was kind of prelude to what would ultimately be a much bigger market, in the sense that like all of the new market and incentive design was geared towards allowing people to transact trading crypto itself, which is you know great, but the ultimate end goal, like if this technology is gonna be extremely valuable, the ultimate end goal is enabling people to trade the like trillions of dollars worth of existing assets that are out there that should move on to blockchain rails. So we thought, one, that's gonna be the biggest market, that's the single biggest opportunity in crypto is enabling these rails to get people to trade stuff that's not crypto assets themselves. And secondly, if you already have your money onchain and you don't want to off-ramp, which I mean, are very good reasons why you wouldn't want to off ramp if you made your money in crypto, or you have a significant amount of your money onchain, you're completely constrained to just being able to invest in or trade cryptoassets. And we had a pretty strong conviction that there would be this sort of like tailwind or like rising set of people who had a majority or a large portion of their wealth onchain and would want to get exposure to other assets. We initially were very focused on commodities specifically. We had this strong conviction that commodity supercycle that's wound up being very true, but we extended beyond, I think, an unnecessary focus on a single asset class to FX, indices, single name stocks, and all of these very liquid global markets that ultimately there was no really easy way to access onchain. So that was sort the first problem. We thought in the next couple of years, this market's going to exist and we can build to capture that market. The second, and I think more important and ultimately far larger TAM, that we saw and problem that we wanted to solve, and this is one that we've been somewhat quiet on to date and have recently, I think, unveiled this larger plan as part of our recent fundraise, like Series A announcement, is a problem that we saw globally in what's called the CFD market. And for the uninitiated, CFDs are called, they're, contracts for difference or contract for differences. People put the 's' in different places. And they are basically, they are the little known fact among crypto people, but they are the dominant retail derivative in the world." A Plea for Difficult Images (A small rant about what I think art is today) Why does the contemporary art world embrace the ugly, the every day, the absurd, the nonsensical, and the visually and conceptually challenging? Why is that? You know this is the case because, 5 out 10 times, you come out of a contemporary art museum asking: What just happened!? What the f*** is this? Why is this art? Well, it is a long story, but let's start with something basic, like, pretty, beautiful images have been done ad infinitum up until the 20th century. Every pretty sunset, cityscape, landscape, still life, and portrait has been done before to perfection. You just need to open up a history of art book, and you will find hundreds of examples of pretty images. The challenge for artists after the invention of the photographic camera, which rendered things so perfectly, was to see other things. The challenge for artists today is to see the world differently: ugly, weird, absurd, unrecognizable. The artist´s mission suddenly became to ask questions and to think and represent differently: art is the place where we can have no certainty; where it is ok to make no sense and just present questions. Beautiful things still get made. Cute is still a thing in 21st-century art, But for completely different reasons. Beauty is not done for beauty's sake, but to challenge why we would, after thousands of years, still want to see beautiful images. Abstract art was once a f*** you to the establishment. But ever since the world tamed it, abstract art has become decorative at best. The last moment or revival of this form was called "Zombie Formalism" for it´s complacent visuals with "modernist and expressionistic styles,” which worked perfectly to please collectors interested in flipping works of art they did not understand from emerging artists who essentially crafted hundreds of generic images indistinguishable from one another. Contemporary art has moved into a space where artists tend to challenge art and beauty. They´ve become philosophers of the image, and in doing so, they have left many viewers perplexed and confused as to what exactly it is that they are witnessing or supposed to connect with. It seems that art today asks viewers and collectors to go on the same trip that the artist has gone through: understand thousands of years of art, read all the books that questioned why that was all made, and experiment with them in what can be considered art today. For those curious about art and collecting, they usually come to art with a blank slate and arrive at pretty pictures and, as many viewers for thousands of years, enjoy what they are looking at. The creators of those pretty pictures call themselves artists, and so it seems the system works. But when those pretty pictures escape the niche they are produced in and try to mingle with the contemporary art world, rarely do they become accepted, because, the museums, the informed collectors and the contemporary art market ask the questions of why pretty pictures again? Why today? How is this advancing our understanding of art? How is this commenting on all we know about art? What are these poster-looking, perfectly designed illustrations proposing to the art world that we have not considered before? And so those questions need to be answered for pretty images to be seen as art. And pretty is not only an aesthetic concept, but it is also about the intentions and the way the artist is capable of expressing his artistic intent. You can have “pretty intentions,” and that, too will be challenged. Simple themes, simple concepts without historical and conceptual rigor, are torn down and debunked because why do we need pretty artistic intentions anymore? Why do we need to see images based on explorations of color or form, self-portraits as an exploration of self, the line between reality and fiction, and the list goes on... These ideas have already been explored to the depths of their possibilities and those explorations became movement in the past. To go down that path again is a matter of practicing or studying to be an artist, but the contemporary art world rarely could see this as a proposal to move forward the world of art. So, you see, a plea for difficult images is a plea to be committed, respectful, thoughtful, and innovative. We cannot move forward, as in all practices that thrive on “the new,” without committing to understanding and challenging what came before. Science asks this of us, technology asks this, literature asks this, and cinema, too. We need pretty images, but they should only be a path to something way more profound. To do and understand art takes time, vulnerability, and a willingness to change… not everyone is willing to take that path. (Healed by Jess Mac)
