Tyranny's Grip: The June 27th Massacre. Today, we remember the victims of the June 27th state-sponsored violence that scarred our nation. On that fateful day in 2008, our country witnessed the brutal exercise of power, leaving a lasting impact on our memory. The loss of lives, destruction of property, and stripping of dignity from our people are wounds that still linger. Our movement withdrew from the June 2008 presidential runoff election due to the unprecedented levels of violence, intimidation, and repression unleashed by the regime. The violence was widespread and brutal, with over 200 people killed, thousands displaced, and many more subjected to torture, rape, and other forms of violence. Homes were burned, businesses looted, and livelihoods destroyed. It was a calculated move, a strategy to cling to power at any cost! Mugabe would stop at nothing to stay in power, thanks to the decisive power block - the military. The regime's desperation to retain power knew no bounds. The only language they understood was violence, engineered from the very same mafia that is in power today. A scorched earth policy was implemented, aimed at killing everything and anyone that resembled resistance. Bases were created, torture chambers constructed overnight, and guns were everywhere. The Zimbabwe Republic Police was rendered useless, as gun-toting goons were unleashed on the population. Blood was spilled, limbs were broken, families were scattered, and destinies were killed. The violence was a dark chapter on our nation's history, and its effects are still felt today. A nation held hostage by tyranny is a troubled nation; it has no hope! The journey to justice and freedom has been long and arduous, but we're resolute in our fight for a better Zimbabwe. We honor the memories of those who suffered and those who lost their lives, and we remain committed to building a future where citizens can all live together in peace and harmony. Compatriots! On our second day in India, our delegation travelled by road to visit the Taj Mahal, a journey that was truly worth every moment. As the Taj Mahal came into view, you could hear the collective “wow” from our delegation, a moment that captured just how breathtaking the experience truly was. Standing before one of the Seven Wonders of the World, we were all struck by its beauty, history, and the remarkable craftsmanship that has endured through generations. We also had the opportunity to visit the nearby village, home to descendants of the original builders, who continue to care for and preserve the site today. It was a powerful reminder of how heritage is passed down, protected with pride, and kept alive through responsibility and stewardship. My sincere thanks to our tour guides for thoughtfully bringing this history to life and enriching the experience for us all.

In Kerala, apparently you can now call a coconut harvester the same way you book a cab. A uniformed professional arrives on a cycle, equipped, trained, and ready to work. We often speak about India’s services economy in terms of IT exports or global capability centres. But we’re digitising even our most traditional, hyper-local services. There was another detail from this video that stayed with me. The young man who climbed those trees was from Chhattisgarh. When I began my career in our Group’s steel business, many of of our associates working in our furnace and foundry shops had come from states like Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, travelling far from home in search of opportunity. Today, it seems those same aspirations are finding avenues not just in heavy industry, as in the past, but in new-age, tech-enabled services. People moving, adapting and rising are a powerful economic force. And also a force for integration. As long as they’re welcomed by the host states!

Today, we celebrate motherhood in all its forms: mothers two-footed and four, and those who take on a mothering role. A special nod goes to our ex-orphans who are now mums. We have met 76 calves born to the orphaned elephants we rescued, raised, and rewilded — each a beautiful testament to the enduring power of maternal love. In the past two months alone, we have welcomed six ‘grandbabies’ to our extended elephant family. Zigi, seen here with his mum, ex-orphan Zongoloni, is one of our latest additions. Zongoloni’s own mother was killed by poachers, and she was found guarding her body. However, she found sanctuary with us and blossomed into a nurturing yet no-nonsense leader. Motherhood may be new to Zongoloni, but she is already thriving in the role. To all our mothers, material figures, and matriarchs: Thank you for being you, and for giving so much of yourself to those around you. #HappyMothersDay
