That’s a bit unfair to Handy. It may not have Flit’s full workflow or developer-specific features, but calling it “half cooked dictation” ignores what it actually does well: it’s free, open source, fully local, cross-platform, supports multiple speech models, and lets you plug in your own local or cloud LLM for post-processing. Flit looks more polished and feature-rich, sure. But Handy gives users far more control over the stack and costs nothing. They’re solving the same problem from very different directions. Again, I still wish you success.

maybe try Flit for a week (it's free for 7 days, no card needed) and then write an honest comparison? the real worth is not dictation. speech to text is one prompt. i spent 3 months on everything around it: words appearing as you speak, formatting that fits the app you're in, spelling your project's file names right, voice commands, snippets, learning your corrections, and paste that works in every field. all on your Mac.

Why I built Flit: I live in AI coding tools and was typing prompts all day. My hands were tired. So I built a dictation app for myself. Hold a key, talk, and the prompt is written. I never planned to ship it. But so many people want a good dictation app that I made it public.

what is the difference from Whisperflow?

The big one: Wispr Flow sends your voice to the cloud. Flit does everything on your Mac, so it works offline, and your words never leave your computer. Wispr Flow is a monthly subscription with an account; Flit is one payment, no account.

my dictated prompts are full of 'actually wait, no...' lol. does Flit keep those corrections verbatim or clean up to the final instruction?

Ha, same. It cleans them up. In chat apps like Claude or ChatGPT, Flit applies the correction, so "Monday, no wait, Tuesday" comes out as just "Tuesday". Simple cases like dates, times, and amounts are handled by fixed rules. Messier changes of mind go to the formatting model. In code editors, it types your exact words instead, on purpose. Try it free for 7 days and send me your messiest prompt.

oh the editor gets verbatim? I'd probably want the cleanup in an agent prompt box too. same app, very different stakes from dictating directly into a source file

You're right, and that's a great distinction. Right now, Flit treats the whole editor as code, so the agent box gets your exact words too. Cleaning up the prompt box while leaving source files alone is the right fix. It's high on my list now.

This looks like a really polished way to make dictation feel effortless, especially with formatting handled automatically. Keeping everything on the Mac is a huge advantage too. I’m curious how well it handles different accents and technical vocabulary in real-world use. 💪

Thanks! Accents depend mostly on the speech model, and you can switch models in Settings. Try a larger one if the default struggles with your voice. For technical words, add them to your dictionary. Flit also notices when you fix a word after it pastes, and asks before remembering it. In code editors, it picks up file names from your open project. Try it with your own voice and jargon. I'd love to hear where it slips.

That sounds impressively thoughtful, especially the way it learns from corrections without getting in the way. I’d test it then I'll give you a feedback ;)

Local everything costs more than the download on a Mac. Mine hit 856 processes with swap at 8.76 of 9.2 GB, and the largest process by RSS was 588 MB while the compressor held 7.39 GB. Sort by compressed size, not RSS, or you are reading the wrong column.

True, and that's why Flit doesn't bring a big AI model by default. It uses the Apple Intelligence already on your Mac, so it stays light. If you want more, you can choose to add a bigger model.

Why Flit and not OpenWhispr or the 50 others open source AI voice tool?

If an open source tool works for you, use it! Flit is for people who want it polished and set up for them. You see the words as you speak, the text is formatted for the app you're typing in, it knows your code's file names, and a real person supports it. You pay once, and everything stays on your Mac.
