Introducing Hypertoadz, a recursively evolving, fully on-chain digital species on Ethereum.

Hypertoadz are a fully on-chain species, built on top of CC0 CrypToadz artwork, that grow via mutation-driven evolution. The species is seeded by Genesis Hypertoadz, which are spawned via auction at a maximum cadence of once per day.

Starting from the Genesis Hypertoadz, any Hypertoad can evolve via mutation, which spawns a new mutated Hypertoad of the next generation. The parent Hypertoad remains unchanged, while a new Hypertoad is born that resembles its parent but with a slight visual mutation. That descendant Hypertoad can spawn its own descendants, and so on and so forth. Over time, late generation Hypertoadz look increasingly mutated and deformed. Mutation is free apart from network gas cost, and mutations and visual changes happen entirely on-chain. Below is an example of what different generations of a given Hypertoad lineage can look like over time.

Each Hypertoad can only mutate once every 24 hours, but must continue mutating in order to stay alive. If a Hypertoad goes 30 days without mutating, it dies. Its body remains on-chain as a fossil, but it can never reproduce again. Hypertoad artwork is dynamic and changes to reflect how long it has gone without a mutation.

If the entire population goes 30 days without any mutations, then the Genesis line also stops forever and the Genesis supply is finalized. At that point, most Genesis Hypertoadz would be dead, but live Genesis Hypertoadz can still mutate while no new Genesis Hypertoadz can ever spawn again.

Thus, Hypertoadz can in theory grow exponentially, and Genesis Hypertoadz linearly, but growth of the Hypertoadz population is ultimately constrained by attention and computation cost (gas). Hypertoadz is networked protocol art on Ethereum, that takes the shape of a dynamic population continuously growing, mutating, evolving, and dying.

The beginning of the mutation period will be gated to a wide allowlist. For the earlier of either the first 10,000 Hypertoadz or first two weeks, any unique wallet that fits any of the below criteria is eligible to mutate up to 3 Hypertoadz total during the initial period. After the period is complete, anyone can mint however many they want into perpetuity. Note: it's 3 per unique wallet, with no additional mutations for more conditions met. It's an intentionally wide allowlist designed with the intention of distributing early Hypertoadz to active onchain participants. The allowlist is published on the Docs page for external verification, and was snapshotted at 5:40 PM ET earlier today. Depending on demand I'm also open to adding more cohorts in a week or so from now since I expect a lot of these wallets are no longer active, so if you think there's a compelling enough onchain group/criterion feel free to share your ideas (but can't promise anything).

Some other notes: 1. Every 10th Genesis Hypertoad is reserved as a creator allocation. 2. While Hypertoadz can grow to exponentially large supply, their Order is marked on-chain. Hypertoadz 0-9 are Order 1, Hypertoadz 10-99 are Order 2, Hypertoadz 100-1000 are Order 3, so on and so forth. 3. 15-18% of proceeds from each Genesis auction are allocated to the artist(s) of each trait of that Genesis Hypertoad, depending on how many traits are used. At launch, this entire artist allocation is initially directed towards @gremplin, since he is the original artist of these traits. The protocol supports new trait additions and artists over time.
