I love relating the idea of solving equations to this representation! Students solve problems like this in early elementary school using part-part-whole models. This could help student relate this new idea to something that they already know.

Bar models are amazing. Every one of my 7th graders could intuitively solve 2-step equations using bar models... naturally using algebra moves.
