We are coming up to the one year anniversary of The Sameer Project. A couple of months into the project we saw a great need for a camp ( ) for internally displaced people that needed additional support because of critical medical cases. Injuries, diseases, chronic conditions, mental and physical disabilities that needed rehabilitation, and more. We had to do something to serve them with dignity and care. But what started as The Refaat Alareer Camp for vulnerable medical cases, quickly turned into a group of people that will forever be our family. From the ground team including the managers, security staff, cleaning crew, teachers, and doctors, to our residents, some who have migrated back to the north, and the babies that were born there…we will always be connected. The Refaat Alareer Camp became a place for refuge, hope, protection. Our camp manger even jumped in front of children playing when a quadcopter started shooting at them, he carried our wheelchair bound elders as the residents of the camp ran for their lives, and most recently organized another emergency evacuation within hours when the occupation threatened. This is what it means to be Palestinian. Community, care, honor, and we could not possibly be any luckier than to work with a team that encompasses all these traits and more. The Refaat Alareer Camp is a medical camp, meaning we have criteria for the families that we bring in who have vulnerable conditions, chronic illnesses or injuries, so that we utilize our services and facilities to benefit those who need help the most. We have an onsite medical clinic that cares for our camp families, takes in patients from the area, and also fills medication and treatment requests we refer to them. On the day of Mosab’s death, Iman, our speech therapist and camp resident distributed Molokhye (Palestinian dish) & rice to the Refaat Alareer camp residents. A camp with 30 families that feels like a family, support them here: Iman told us that she saw Mosab on his way out while distributing, and she told him “when you’re back, I’ll cook you Molokhye.” He was wearing a white shirt and smiled telling her that he looks forward to it. Mosab never came back and never had molokhye. Instead, the car he was in got bombed and his white shirt was drenched in blood. Musab is one of the most critical, and most devastating patients we have cared for under The Sameer Project. Months ago we would visit Musab nearly weekly with food parcels, nutritional help, and hygiene support, along with his medication, when he was at Al Shifa Hospital in the North. Upon evacuating to the South and being denied inpatient hospital services at Al Aqsa due to overcrowding, The Sameer Project has been in regular contact with the family to figure out how best to serve Musab. We immediately supplied him with a tent and a large food parcel with weeks worth of pantry staples. We also gave the injured child diapers and a restock of his medication. We want to do more, but in Gaza there are endless obstacles. The plan was to bring Musab and his family to one of our medical camps, with an onsite medical clinic ready to deal with any emergency. But Musab requires 24 hour electricity to run his air mattress, blender for food, and suction machine to remove secretion out of his airways. The Refaat Alareer Camp, Sawarha Camp, and Batool Camp like most of Gaza relies on solar panels for electricity. As the days become shorter and cloudier, electricity is not reliable. We are in discussion with Musab’s mother and father and ready to receive Musab when his family sees fit given the uncertain conditions. It just shows you the amount of effort and considerations that go into every decision of bringing every family into our medical camps. After suffering extreme injuries to her shoulder, leg, and elbow from an airstrike targeting the Mosque she was praying in, Alaa came to the Refaat Alareer Camp for treatment and rehabilitation. The family evacuated South from Al Shifa Hospital during the land incursion in the North. She has been receiving daily wound cleanings and starting physiotherapy, as well as participating in camp events and school. But Alaa’s immune system is weak due to all her injuries and she recently came down with an infection that had her admitted to the hospital. But The Sameer Project’s care and support followed her there. We brought her a package of nutritions food to help with her healing, as well as some treats like nuts and pastries to lift her spirits. The Sameer Project camps host around 117 families and one of them is the Batoul Camp that has around 27 vulnerable families. On June 15th, we distributed diapers and formula to those who need it for $217, including 11% commission. This included 6 packs of baby diapers and 5 adult diapers and 5 formula. Our efforts in providing tents continue in Sahel Sharqi camp in Deir El Balah. Many families in the camp live under a blanket or flour bags stitched together, donate: The Sameer Project team goes to the camp and supports the family by building the new tents for them. We understand that everyone in Gaza is in néed but the levels vary and we aim to support those most underserved.
