"What the hell is a Doomed Machine?" A 'Machine' is a programmable piece of animated artwork that lives fully on-chain, mainnet Ethereum. There are 18 different Machines and each has as a low supply of individually numbered editions. Once you own a machine edition, you control your own version of that Machine. Each Machine contains three different animation sources, combined with decay and glitch effects. These are the raw elements that can all be manipulated and combined to create the final artwork. What can you actually customise? The artwork is split into a number of rows, and you have control over all of it. For each row you can choose which of the three animations to use, which frames play, how many frames are in the loop, or freeze it on a single still. You can control the speed of every single element, enable decay between rows, and use one of three levels of glitch. So you aren't simply choosing between three animations to view. You're composing the entire final artwork from all the underlying material. And there is a massive number of possible combinations. You can make something slow and subtle with a few different elements, or something fast and completely twisted. 🧵...

It's actually pretty simple and will happen on The Doomed Machine website The 'Randomise' button is a great way to get started The Machine instantly generates a new configuration If you like it you can store that as one of your on-chain presets (more on presets below) or you can manually change every element yourself You are in full control of your machine. You can keep doing this as often as you want until you create something you like. 🧵...

Presets Every machine edition has 5 preset slots One is immutable and holds the configuration the edition was born with. The other four are controlled by the owner. You can save a configuration to a preset with a gas transaction, then switch between your saved states whenever you want. And you can overwrite those four presets whenever you want. So your Machine can keep evolving over time. If you sell your edition, the new owner takes control of the four customisable preset slots. 🧵...

How many Machines are there? There are 18 different Machines. Each Machine has its own underlying artwork, palette and animation ingredients, and each has a different number of editions. Some Machines are unique 1/1s. Others have editions up to 15 (1/15) Example: If Machine #1 has a supply of 5 editions, they will be numbered: 1/5 2/5 3/5 4/5 5/5 This is where the distinction between a Machine and an edition is important. A Machine is an artwork engine. The numbered editions are the individual tokens people own. So, in the example above, 5 people could own editions of Machine #1, but each person controls their own version and can configure it completely differently. This is why we're using individually numbered ERC-721s rather than ERC-1155. With an ERC-1155 edition, multiple people effectively share the same token. Here, every edition is its own token. Each has its own identity, ownership history and provenance. And because each token is separate, each one can have its own configuration. 🧵...

What does fully on-chain actually mean? The artwork and metadata is generated entirely from the Ethereum smart contracts. In this case all preset configurations are also stored on-chain and form part of an editions legacy. There are no external dependencies such as IPFS hosting the artwork. Because the machines live on-chain the artwork can always be reproduced from the blockchain so long as Ethereum exists. Currently the raw artwork that we will be putting fully on-chain for this collection exceeds 200mb - needless to say, there is some compression wizardry going on 🧵...

"Wait a minute... that art looks like The Doomed by XCOPY?" "The Doomed" is one of XCOPY's most legendary works. Originally released in 2018 as 100x ERC-721 editions, it has become one of the defining pieces of early crypto art. In 2022, XCOPY announced all of his work would be CC0, inviting other artists to remix and build upon it. We'll try and get an example Machine running on the website before the mint so the system can be experienced before the mint.
