He played every instrument himself, including guitar, keyboards and vocals, and programmed the Linn LM-1 drum machine. During the final mix, he made the highly unusual decision to remove the bass line entirely, even though he had already recorded one. Despite featuring neither a bass guitar nor a synthesizer bass in the finished version, the song became Prince’s first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100.
