The order clears the way for aircraft to fly faster than sound, calling for FAA regulation repeals and new noise-based standards. The order advances supersonic research coordination and global regulatory alignment through the National Science and Technology Council. It aims to cut coast-to-coast flight times to under four hours, removing barriers to U.S. dominance in supersonic aviation. The X-59 test flight over California could eventually cut NYC to LA travel time in half. Supersonic flight has existed since 1947, but the explosive noise rattled windows and freaked people out, so it was banned over US land.
